The Firefly and the Lotus

Doha 9: The Firefly and the Lotus

Ravana woos and threatens Sita; she answers from behind a blade of grass that a firefly cannot open a lotus.

Verse 9.1

तरु पल्लव महँ रहा लुकाई। करइ बिचार करौं का भाई॥ तेहि अवसर रावनु तहँ आवा। संग नारि बहु किएँ बनावा॥ १ ॥

taru pallava maham̐ rahā lukāī karai bichāra karauṁ kā bhāī tehi avasara rāvanu taham̐ āvā saṁga nāri bahu kiem̐ banāvā

Translation

He stayed hidden among the leaves of a tree, wondering, "What should I do now?" Just then Ravana came there, dressed up, with many women accompanying him.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

वे पेड़ के पत्तों में छिपे रहे और सोचने लगे, "भाई, अब क्या करूँ?" उसी समय रावण सज-धजकर बहुत सी स्त्रियों को साथ लेकर वहाँ आया।

Verse 9.2

बहु बिधि खल सीतहि समुझावा। साम दान भय भेद देखावा॥ कह रावनु सुनु सुमुखि सयानी। मंदोदरी आदि सब रानी॥ २ ॥

bahu bidhi khala sītahi samujhāvā sāma dāna bhaya bheda dekhāvā kaha rāvanu sunu sumukhi sayānī maṁdodarī ādi saba rānī

Translation

The villain tried in many ways to persuade Sita, trying persuasion, bribery, threats and division by turns. Ravana said, "Listen, lovely and wise one: Mandodari and all my queens

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

दुष्ट ने सीता जी को बहुत प्रकार से समझाया। उसने साम, दान, भय और भेद, सब उपाय दिखाए। रावण बोला, "हे सुमुखी, सयानी! सुनो, मंदोदरी आदि सब रानियों को

Commentary

Sama, dana, bheda and danda (here bhaya, fear) are the four classical methods of statecraft. Ravana tries them all on Sita as if she were a rival kingdom to conquer, and none of them works.

Verse 9.3

तव अनुचरीं करउँ पन मोरा। एक बार बिलोकु मम ओरा॥ तृन धरि ओट कहति बैदेही। सुमिरि अवधपति परम सनेही॥ ३ ॥

tava anucharīṁ karaum̐ pana morā eka bāra biloku mama orā tṛina dhari oṭa kahati baidehī sumiri avadhapati parama sanehī

Translation

"I will make your servants; that is my vow. Just look my way once." Holding up a blade of grass as a screen, Vaidehi answered, remembering her beloved Lord of Awadh:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"मैं तुम्हारी दासियाँ बना दूँगा, यह मेरी प्रतिज्ञा है। बस एक बार मेरी ओर देख लो।" तब परम स्नेही अवधपति का स्मरण करके वैदेही ने तिनके की ओट करके कहा:

Commentary

Sita will not even speak to Ravana directly; she places a blade of grass between them. The gesture is often read as saying that he is worth no more than grass to her, and that even a straw is enough protection for a faithful wife.

Verse 9.4

सुनु दसमुख खद्योत प्रकासा। कबहुँ कि नलिनी करइ बिकासा॥ अस मन समुझु कहति जानकी। खल सुधि नहिं रघुबीर बान की॥ ४ ॥

sunu dasamukha khadyota prakāsā kabahum̐ ki nalinī karai bikāsā asa mana samujhu kahati jānakī khala sudhi nahiṁ raghubīra bāna kī

Translation

"Listen, ten-faced one: can a lotus ever open in the light of a firefly?" Janaki said, "Think about this in your heart. You wretch, you have no idea of Raghubir's arrows.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"सुन दशमुख! क्या जुगनू के प्रकाश से कभी कमलिनी खिल सकती है?" जानकी जी कहती हैं, "मन में यह समझ ले। दुष्ट! तुझे रघुवीर के बाणों का पता नहीं।

Commentary

The lotus opens only to the sun. Sita's image makes Ravana a firefly and Rama the sun, which is exactly how Ravana will understand the insult in the doha that follows.

Verse 9.5

सठ सूनें हरि आनेहि मोही। अधम निलज्ज लाज नहिं तोही॥ ५ ॥

saṭha sūneṁ hari ānehi mohī adhama nilajja lāja nahiṁ tohī

Translation

"You villain, you carried me off when no one was there. You base, shameless creature, have you no shame?"

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"अरे दुष्ट! तू मुझे सूने में हर लाया। अधम, निर्लज्ज! तुझे लज्जा नहीं आती?"

Verse 9.6

आपुहि सुनि खद्योत सम रामहि भानु समान। परुष बचन सुनि काढ़ि असि बोला अति खिसिआन॥ ९ ॥

āpuhi suni khadyota sama rāmahi bhānu samāna paruṣha bachana suni kāṛhi asi bolā ati khisiāna

Translation

Hearing himself likened to a firefly and Rama to the sun, and hearing her harsh words, he drew his sword and spoke in great anger:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

अपने को जुगनू के समान और राम को सूर्य के समान सुनकर, और ऐसे कठोर वचन सुनकर, वह तलवार निकालकर बड़े क्रोध में बोला:
