Has He Forgotten Me?

Doha 14: Has He Forgotten Me?

Sita asks after Rama and wonders at his delay; Hanuman tells her Rama's love is twice her own.

Verse 14.1

हरिजन जानि प्रीति अति गाढ़ी। सजल नयन पुलकावलि बाढ़ी॥ बूड़त बिरह जलधि हनुमाना। भयहु तात मो कहुँ जलजाना॥ १ ॥

harijana jāni prīti ati gāṛhī sajala nayana pulakāvali bāṛhī būṛata biraha jaladhi hanumānā bhayahu tāta mo kahum̐ jalajānā

Translation

Knowing him to be Hari's own servant, she felt deep affection; her eyes filled with tears and her body thrilled. "Hanuman, I was drowning in the ocean of separation, and you have become my ship, dear one.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

aba kahu kusala jāum̐ balihārī anuja sahita sukha bhavana kharārī komalachita kṛipāla raghurāī kapi kehi hetu dharī niṭhurāī

Translation

"Now tell me, bless you, is the slayer of Khara, the home of joy, well along with his younger brother? Raghurai is tender-hearted and compassionate; why, monkey, has he become so hard?

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"अब बलिहारी जाऊँ, बताओ, छोटे भाई सहित सुख के धाम खर के शत्रु (श्री राम) कुशल से तो हैं? रघुनाथ जी कोमल हृदय और कृपालु हैं, फिर हे कपि! उन्होंने यह निष्ठुरता क्यों धारण कर ली?

Commentary

Sita's question is the loving complaint of a wife who knows her husband's kindness and cannot understand the delay. The Manas lets her say it openly.

Verse 14.3

सहज बानि सेवक सुखदायक। कबहुँक सुरति करत रघुनायक॥ कबहुँ नयन मम सीतल ताता। होइहहिं निरखि स्याम मृदु गाता॥ ३ ॥

sahaja bāni sevaka sukhadāyaka kabahum̐ka surati karata raghunāyaka kabahum̐ nayana mama sītala tātā hoihahiṁ nirakhi syāma mṛidu gātā

Translation

"It is his very nature to bring joy to his servants. Does Raghunayak ever remember me? Will my eyes ever be cooled, dear one, by seeing his dark, tender form?"

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"सेवकों को सुख देना तो उनका स्वभाव ही है। क्या रघुनायक कभी मुझे याद करते हैं? हे तात! क्या कभी उनके श्याम कोमल शरीर को देखकर मेरी आँखें शीतल होंगी?"

Verse 14.4

बचनु न आव नयन भरे बारी। अहह नाथ हौं निपट बिसारी॥ देखि परम बिरहाकुल सीता। बोला कपि मृदु बचन बिनीता॥ ४ ॥

bachanu na āva nayana bhare bārī ahaha nātha hauṁ nipaṭa bisārī dekhi parama birahākula sītā bolā kapi mṛidu bachana binītā

Translation

She could not speak; her eyes filled with tears. "Ah, my Lord, you have completely forgotten me!" Seeing Sita so stricken by separation, the monkey spoke in gentle, humble words:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

mātu kusala prabhu anuja sametā tava dukha dukhī sukṛipā niketā jani jananī mānahu jiyam̐ ūnā tumha te premu rāma keṁ dūnā

Translation

"Mother, the Lord is well, along with his brother, but that abode of grace is sorrowful at your sorrow. Mother, do not think yourself less loved: Rama's love for you is twice yours for him.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"माता! प्रभु छोटे भाई सहित कुशल हैं, पर कृपा के धाम आपके दुख से दुखी हैं। हे माता! मन में अपने को छोटा मत समझिए, राम के मन में आपसे दुगुना प्रेम है।

Commentary

Hanuman answers Sita's fear directly: she thinks she has been forgotten, and he tells her Rama loves her twice as much as she loves him.

Verse 14.6

रघुपति कर संदेसु अब सुनु जननी धरि धीर। अस कहि कपि गदगद भयउ भरे बिलोचन नीर॥ १४ ॥

Translation

"Mother, now hold steady and hear Raghupati's message." Saying this, the monkey was overcome with emotion and his eyes filled with tears.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे माता! अब धीरज धरकर श्री रघुनाथ जी का संदेश सुनिए।" यह कहकर कपि का गला भर आया और आँखों में आँसू भर आए।
