A guide for students
Traditional Sanskrit degrees have names of their own. Here is what they mean, who can apply, and where they lead. Rules change every year — always confirm on the institution's website.
The degrees, explained
| Traditional name | Equivalent to | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Prak Shastri / Uttar Madhyama | Class 12 (10+2) level | School stage |
| Shastri | B.A. (bachelor's degree) | 3 years, or 4 with honours / under NEP |
| Acharya | M.A. (master's degree) | 2 years |
| Shiksha Shastri | B.Ed. | 2 years |
| Shiksha Acharya | M.Ed. | 2 years |
| Vidyavaridhi | Ph.D. (doctorate) | Research degree |
Names vary a little: Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University calls its honours degree Sanmanita Shastri, and some universities spell it Sastri.
Who can apply
›Can I join Shastri straight after Class 12?
Yes. Shastri admits students who have passed Class 12 (10+2) or an equivalent traditional examination such as Uttar Madhyama or Prak Shastri. Requirements differ: Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University asks for 40% marks, while BHU asks for 50% with Sanskrit as one of the subjects. Some universities also set an age limit — 25 years at SLBS, 22 years at BHU for 2025.
›What do I need for Acharya?
A Shastri degree, or a B.A. with Sanskrit, from a recognised university — that is the rule at Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, for example.
›Is there an entrance exam?
At the central universities, admission to many programmes goes through NTA's Common University Entrance Test (CUET) — BHU's Shastri, for instance, is filled through CUET-UG. State universities often run their own admission process, so check each institution's notice.
›I didn't study Sanskrit at school. Can I still study Jyotish?
Possibly. Besides the Shastri–Acharya track, some universities run separate Jyotish degrees — Gurukula Kangri's M.A. in Jyotir Vigyan & Vedic Karmkand and Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University's B.A. and M.A. in Vedang Jyotish, for example. Rules also change: Sampurnanand Sanskrit University relaxed its Sanskrit-subject requirement for Shastri admission in 2024–25. Always check the current prospectus.
Where these studies lead
Teaching
Shiksha Shastri (B.Ed.) prepares Sanskrit teachers for schools. Teaching in colleges and universities usually needs Acharya plus UGC-NET or a Vidyavaridhi (Ph.D.).
Jyotish & Vastu
Graduates in Siddhanta or Phalit Jyotish and Vastushastra work as consultants, panchang makers and researchers — BHU's faculty itself has produced the Vishwapanchang since 1926.
Karmakand & Paurohitya
Trained purohits conduct samskaras, yajnas and temple worship. Courses such as SLBS's Paurohitya and Gurukula Kangri's Vedic Paurohitya-Karmkand teach the rituals properly, with their meaning.
Research & manuscripts
Editing, translating and cataloguing manuscripts in libraries such as Sampurnanand's Saraswati Bhavana, and research through a Vidyavaridhi.
Yoga
Degrees from a B.Sc. in Yogic Science to an M.Sc. in Yoga Therapy lead to work as yoga teachers and therapists.
Sanskrit & technology
A newer path: National Sanskrit University offers an M.Sc. in Computer Science & Sanskrit Language Technology, and Central Sanskrit University a B.Tech. in AI & Data Science involving Sanskrit.
