History

Founded in 1992

The Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan established the Rajiv Gandhi Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha at Sringeri on 13 January 1992. Its foundation stone was laid by Jagadguru Sri Bharati Teertha Mahaswamiji of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham in the presence of President R. Venkataraman and Union Minister Arjun Singh. It became a campus when the Sansthan was declared a deemed university in 2002, and is now a campus of the Central Sanskrit University.

Learning in Sanskrit, beside the Peetham

Sringeri, associated with the sages Vibhandaka and Rishyashringa and with the Sharada Peetham founded by Adi Shankaracharya, gives the campus its setting. Sanskrit is the medium of instruction and of everyday communication; the Vagvardhini Parishad, the Sharada lecture series and the Vakyartha Parishad train students in spoken Sanskrit and shastric debate. Students receive a midday meal, Sharada Prasada, from the Sringeri Math, and toppers are awarded the Jagadguru Sri Bharati Teertha gold medal. The campus has 10.2 acres, with boys' and girls' hostels.
