Frequently asked questions

Is this rashifal by Moon sign or Sun sign?
Moon sign (Chandra rashi), as in Indian astrology. Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born — it is written on your janam kundli, and is often different from the Western "star sign", which follows the Sun. If you do not know it, the name-letter table on this page gives the rashi traditionally matched to the first syllable of a name.
How is the daily rashifal worked out?
From the Moon's transit. Each day we take the sign the Moon is in at sunrise and count which house it falls in from your rashi. Classical texts hold the Moon favourable in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th houses and difficult in the others — the 8th, Chandrashtama, most of all. The reading, ratings and lucky details all follow from that position, not from random text.
What is Chandrashtama?
The roughly two and a quarter days each month when the Moon passes through the 8th sign from your rashi. South Indian practice in particular avoids starting anything important — a journey, a purchase, a ceremony — on these days. The weekly and monthly pages list your Chandrashtama dates in advance.
Where do the shubh ank and shubh rang come from?
From the grahas. Each graha has a number (Sun 1, Moon 2, Jupiter 3, Rahu 4, Mercury 5, Venus 6, Ketu 7, Saturn 8, Mars 9) and a colour. Your shubh ank is your rashi lord's number — 9 for Mesh, ruled by Mars — and on a good day the number of the lord of the Moon's sign is added. The daily shubh rang is the colour of the weekday's ruling graha when that weekday suits your rashi.
Why can my day go differently from the rashifal?
A rashifal looks only at transits from the Moon sign, which one person in twelve shares with you. Your own kundli — the ascendant, the running dasha, the strength of each graha at birth — decides how strongly a transit is felt. Treat the rashifal as a weather report for the day, and consult an astrologer with your birth details for decisions that matter.
