The basic rule
Mars (Mangal, also Kuja or Bhauma) is the planet of energy, courage, aggression and blood. Mangal dosh — also called Kuja dosha or Bhauma dosha — is said to arise when Mars occupies one of these houses:
- 1st (lagna) — temperament: Mars here makes a person forceful and quick-tempered.
- 4th — domestic peace and happiness at home.
- 7th — the spouse and the marriage itself.
- 8th — longevity of the marriage, and sudden events.
- 12th — the bed, expenses and intimacy.
Many South Indian traditions also include the 2nd house (family). The check is made not only from the lagna but also from the Moon and, by many, from Venus; Mars in one of these houses from the lagna is the strongest form, and from the Moon or Venus a milder one.
Why so many people are manglik
Five houses out of twelve is already about 40% of all charts when counted from the lagna alone. Add the Moon and Venus, and most people turn out to be manglik by at least one measure. This is the strongest argument that the rule cannot be applied mechanically — and why the cancellations below matter so much.
Cancellations (Mangal dosh parihara)
Classical and traditional sources list many exceptions. The most widely accepted are:
- Both partners are manglik — the most famous rule: the dosh in one chart balances the other.
- Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn) in the relevant house.
- Mars aspected by or conjoined with Jupiter, or a strong Jupiter or Venus in the lagna or 7th.
- Specific house-and-sign combinations — e.g. Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, in the 4th in Aries or Scorpio, in the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn, in the 8th in Sagittarius or Pisces, in the 12th in Taurus or Libra — listed in many manuals as nullifying the dosh. Lists differ between texts.
- Malefics such as Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the same houses in the partner's chart are counted by many as balancing it.
There is also a popular saying that Mangal dosh "ends at 28". It is a folk belief, not a classical rule, and astrologers disagree on it.
What families actually do
- Check whether the dosh exists from the lagna, Moon and Venus — and how strongly.
- Check the partner's chart for a matching dosh or balancing malefics.
- Look at the whole gun milan and both 7th houses — a single factor should not decide a marriage.
- If a mild dosh remains, do the remedies below and proceed with a good vivah muhurat.
Remedies
- Kumbh vivah — a symbolic marriage of a manglik woman to a clay pot, or to a peepal or banana tree, or to an image of Vishnu (Vishnu vivah), before the real wedding; for men, Arka vivah with the arka plant. The idea is that the dosh is "spent" on the first, symbolic marriage.
- Hanuman worship on Tuesdays — Mars's day — with the Hanuman Chalisa, Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak or Bajrang Baan. See Tuesday Hanuman bhakti.
- Mangal shanti puja — especially at the Mangalnath temple in Ujjain, revered as Mars's birthplace, where bhat (rice) puja is offered on the Shivling.
- Charity of red lentils (masoor), jaggery or red cloth on Tuesdays, and the Navagraha Stotra.
A necessary word
Mangal dosh has been used to reject, delay and stigmatise countless people — overwhelmingly women. No responsible reading of Jyotish supports treating a manglik person as dangerous to a spouse. Two people's character, values and readiness for marriage are what the tradition's own wedding vows are about; a planet in a house is one consideration among many.
