How it forms
Guru Chandal dosh (or yoga) forms when Jupiter and Rahu are in the same house. Some astrologers also count Jupiter with Ketu, or a strong mutual aspect, but the conjunction with Rahu is the standard definition. The name pairs the guru, the teacher, with the chandala, the outcast — an image of sacred wisdom in the company of what traditional society placed outside its bounds. Readers today often prefer the neutral term "Guru–Rahu yoga".
What it is said to do
Jupiter governs wisdom, ethics, teachers, children, wealth and faith. Rahu magnifies, distorts and pushes towards the foreign and the unorthodox. Together, the traditional reading includes:
- Clouded judgement — confident decisions made on bad information.
- Friction with teachers, elders or religious tradition; or following false gurus.
- Ethical shortcuts in money matters.
- Delays or worries concerning children (Jupiter is their karaka).
The same combination is also read positively: Rahu's hunger joined to Jupiter's learning can produce scholars of foreign subjects, reformers and people who teach outside conventional institutions. Much depends on which planet is stronger.
What changes the reading
- Jupiter's strength: in its own sign (Sagittarius, Pisces) or exaltation (Cancer), Jupiter is said to "hold" Rahu, and the dosh is much weaker.
- Degrees: the closer the two, the stronger the effect.
- House: the combination affects the matters of the house it falls in — the 5th (children, studies) and 9th (dharma, father, guru) are considered the most sensitive.
- Dashas: effects are expected mainly during the periods of Jupiter or Rahu.
Remedies
- Thursday worship of Vishnu or one's chosen deity — see Thursday Vishnu bhakti — with the Vishnu Gayatri or Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.
- Respect for teachers and elders — the remedy named most often. Chanting the Guru Mantra and honouring one's teacher on Guru Purnima.
- Charity on Thursdays: yellow items — chana dal, turmeric, bananas — and support for students or teachers.
- Ganesh worship, because he governs buddhi (discernment), and the Navagraha Stotra.
The real lesson
Whatever one thinks of the astrology, the name points at a real risk: wisdom without discernment, and following whoever speaks most confidently. Choosing teachers carefully, checking facts and staying humble are remedies that work for everyone.
