Where Nadi fits in gun milan
North Indian kundli matching uses the Ashtakoot ("eight factors") system, scored out of 36:
- Varna — 1 · Vashya — 2 · Tara — 3 · Yoni — 4
- Graha Maitri — 5 · Gana — 6 · Bhakoot — 7 · Nadi — 8
All eight are read from the bride's and groom's Moon nakshatras and signs. A total of 18 is the usual minimum for a match. Nadi alone is worth 8 points and is all-or-nothing: different nadis score 8, the same nadi scores 0.
The three nadis
The nadis take their names from Ayurveda's three doshas — vata, pitta and kapha — and are thought of as the couple's fundamental constitutions. The 27 nakshatras are assigned to them in a zigzag:
| Aadi (Vata) | Madhya (Pitta) | Antya (Kapha) |
|---|---|---|
| Ashwini | Bharani | Krittika |
| Ardra | Mrigashira | Rohini |
| Punarvasu | Pushya | Ashlesha |
| Uttara Phalguni | Purva Phalguni | Magha |
| Hasta | Chitra | Swati |
| Jyeshtha | Anuradha | Vishakha |
| Mula | Purva Ashadha | Uttara Ashadha |
| Shatabhisha | Dhanishtha | Shravana |
| Purva Bhadrapada | Uttara Bhadrapada | Revati |
So if the bride's Moon is in Rohini (Antya) and the groom's in Shravana (also Antya), there is Nadi dosh; if his is in Hasta (Aadi), there is not.
Why it is taken so seriously
Traditional texts link Nadi dosh with problems of health and progeny — the reasoning being that two people of the same constitution are less complementary, and that it affects the children of the union. Because it carries the highest weight in the system, many families treat a Nadi dosh as decisive even when the total score is otherwise high. South Indian matching (the ten-porutham system) weighs things differently; there Rajju plays a comparably decisive role.
When Nadi dosh does not apply
Muhurat and matching texts list exceptions (parihara). The most widely accepted are:
- Same nakshatra, different charan (quarter), for certain nakshatras.
- Same Moon sign but different nakshatras.
- Same nakshatra but different Moon signs — possible for nakshatras that span two signs, such as Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishtha and Purva Bhadrapada.
- The lords of both Moon signs are the same or mutual friends, according to some authorities.
Exactly which exceptions apply, and for which nakshatras, varies between traditions — so this is a question for an experienced astrologer looking at both charts, not a rule of thumb.
Remedies when a match is otherwise good
- The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra — a set count of japa, often 1.25 lakh by priests, or 108 daily by the couple.
- Nadi dosh nivaran puja and charity — traditionally gifts of grain, cloth, gold or a cow — before the wedding.
- Vishnu worship — for example the Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya mantra — and Thursday fasting are also commonly advised.
A modern perspective
Because the health concern is the heart of Nadi dosh, some families today pair it with what medicine can actually test — for instance, a blood test for thalassaemia carrier status, which genuinely does affect children. A low Nadi score is a reason to look more carefully, not a verdict on two people's future together.
