History
From a 1908 Mahavidyalaya
The Shri Raghunath Kirti Adarsha Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, established in 1908 at Devprayag, was taken over by the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan on 16 June 2016 as its 13th constituent campus, and is now a campus of the Central Sanskrit University. Like the old Mahavidyalaya, it is named after Shri Raghunathji, the deity of Devprayag's ancient Raghunath temple. The former Mahavidyalaya donated its premises of 3.443 hectares, and the Government of Uttarakhand added 9.228 hectares, about 23 acres in all.
Devprayag as a seat of learning
According to the Kedarakhanda of the Skanda Purana, Devprayag takes its name from the sage Devasharma, who did penance here. It is the first of the five prayags of Uttarakhand, and its Nrisimhachala area was once known across the region as a centre of learning, a vidyakshetra. The campus began with five departments, around a hundred students and fifteen teachers, and also runs a non-formal spoken Sanskrit course.
