History

A gurukula on the Ganga (1902)

Swami Shraddhanand founded Gurukula Kangri on 4 March 1902 on the banks of the Ganga, about 6 km from Haridwar, with one aim: to revive the ancient Indian gurukula system of education. It was meant as an indigenous alternative to Macaulay's education policy, teaching Vedic literature, Indian philosophy and Indian culture alongside modern sciences and research.

Growth

In keeping with the Arya Samaj's long support for women's education, Acharya Ramdev established the Kanya Gurukula Campus at Dehradun in 1922, and a Kanya Gurukula Campus at Haridwar followed in 1993. A Faculty of Engineering & Technology was added in 2000.

Over the years the gurukula has welcomed visitors such as Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and C. F. Andrews. It is a Deemed to be University fully funded by the UGC / Government of India.
