Bihar's Sanskrit university, established on 26 January 1961 through the generosity of Maharajadhiraj Sir Kameshwar Singh of Darbhanga. Its jurisdiction once covered all of India and today covers Bihar. It teaches from Upashastri through Shastri, Acharya, Shiksha Shastri (B.Ed.) and Ph.D.

History

A Maharaja's gift (1961)

The university was established on 26 January 1961 under the Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya Act, 1960 (Bihar Act VI of 1960), made possible by the generosity of Maharajadhiraj Dr. Sir Kameshwar Singh, with the support of the then Governor of Bihar, Dr. Zakir Husain, and Chief Minister Dr. Shrikrishna Singh.

Today

At its founding the university's jurisdiction was the whole of India; it now covers the state of Bihar and works under the Bihar State Universities Act, 1976. It is recognised by the UGC and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities.
