The Boon of Devotion

Doha 34: The Boon of Devotion

Hanuman asks only for unfailing devotion; Rama grants it and orders the army to march.

Verse 34.1

नाथ भगति अति सुखदायनी। देहु कृपा करि अनपायनी॥ सुनि प्रभु परम सरल कपि बानी। एवमस्तु तब कहेउ भवानी॥ १ ॥

nātha bhagati ati sukhadāyanī dehu kṛipā kari anapāyanī suni prabhu parama sarala kapi bānī evamastu taba kaheu bhavānī

Translation

"Master, out of your grace, give me unfailing devotion, the source of the greatest joy." Hearing the monkey's utterly simple words, Bhavani, the Lord said, "So be it."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे नाथ! कृपा करके मुझे अत्यंत सुख देने वाली अपनी अनपायिनी (कभी न छूटने वाली) भक्ति दीजिए।" हे भवानी! कपि की अत्यंत सरल वाणी सुनकर प्रभु ने कहा, "एवमस्तु (ऐसा ही हो)।"

Commentary

Offered any reward, Hanuman asks for anapayini bhakti, devotion that never falls away. It is the same request Tulsidas made in the mangalacharan (0.2).

Verse 34.2

उमा राम सुभाउ जेहिं जाना। ताहि भजनु तजि भाव न आना॥ यह संबाद जासु उर आवा। रघुपति चरन भगति सोइ पावा॥ २ ॥

umā rāma subhāu jehiṁ jānā tāhi bhajanu taji bhāva na ānā yaha saṁbāda jāsu ura āvā raghupati charana bhagati soi pāvā

Translation

"Uma, anyone who has come to know Rama's nature loves nothing but worshipping him. Whoever takes this dialogue to heart gains devotion to Raghupati's feet."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे उमा! जिसने राम का स्वभाव जान लिया, उसे भजन छोड़कर और कुछ अच्छा नहीं लगता। यह संवाद जिसके हृदय में आ गया, उसने श्री रघुनाथ जी के चरणों की भक्ति पा ली।"

Commentary

Shiva offers a phalashruti, a statement of the reward for hearing: the fruit of this Rama–Hanuman dialogue is devotion itself.

Verse 34.3

सुनि प्रभु बचन कहहिं कपि बृंदा। जय जय जय कृपाल सुखकंदा॥ तब रघुपति कपिपतिहि बोलावा। कहा चलैं कर करहु बनावा॥ ३ ॥

suni prabhu bachana kahahiṁ kapi bṛiṁdā jaya jaya jaya kṛipāla sukhakaṁdā taba raghupati kapipatihi bolāvā kahā chalaiṁ kara karahu banāvā

Translation

Hearing the Lord's words, the troops of monkeys cried, "Victory, victory, victory to the compassionate one, the root of joy!" Then Raghupati called the king of the monkeys and told him, "Make preparations to march.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

aba bilaṁbu kehi kārana kīje turata kapinha kahum̐ āyasu dīje kautuka dekhi sumana bahu baraṣhī nabha teṁ bhavana chale sura haraṣhī

Translation

"Why delay any longer? Give the monkeys their orders at once." Watching this, the gods showered many flowers and went home from the sky rejoicing.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"अब देरी किस कारण की जाए? वानरों को तुरंत आज्ञा दो।" यह लीला देखकर देवताओं ने बहुत से फूल बरसाए और आकाश से प्रसन्न होकर अपने लोक को चले।

Verse 34.5

कपिपति बेगि बोलाए आए जूथप जूथ। नाना बरन अतुल बल बानर भालु बरूथ॥ ३४ ॥

kapipati begi bolāe āe jūthapa jūtha nānā barana atula bala bānara bhālu barūtha

Translation

The king of the monkeys quickly summoned them, and the leaders came with their troops: hosts of monkeys and bears of many colours and unequalled strength.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

कपिराज ने तुरंत बुलाया, और सेनापति अपनी टुकड़ियों के साथ आ गए। अनेक रंगों के, अतुलनीय बल वाले वानरों और भालुओं के झुंड आ पहुँचे।
