How to Cross the Ocean

Doha 50: How to Cross the Ocean

Rama asks for counsel; Vibhishana advises asking the ocean, Rama's family elder, for a way.

Verse 50.1

asa prabhu chhāṛi bhajahiṁ je ānā te nara pasu binu pūm̐chha biṣhānā nija jana jāni tāhi apanāvā prabhu subhāva kapi kula mana bhāvā

Translation

Those who leave such a Lord and worship someone else are beasts without the tail and horns. Knowing him to be his own, the Lord made Vibhishana his, and the Lord's nature delighted the whole monkey race.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

puni sarbagya sarba ura bāsī sarbarūpa saba rahita udāsī bole bachana nīti pratipālaka kārana manuja danuja kula ghālaka

Translation

Then the all-knowing one, who dwells in every heart, who takes every form and yet is untouched by all, who upholds good policy and has become a man for a purpose, to destroy the demon race, spoke:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sunu kapīsa laṁkāpati bīrā kehi bidhi taria jaladhi gaṁbhīrā saṁkula makara uraga jhaṣha jātī ati agādha dustara saba bhām̐ti

Translation

"Listen, king of the monkeys and heroic lord of Lanka: how shall we cross this deep ocean? It teems with crocodiles, snakes and fish of every kind; it is bottomless and impossible to cross in every way."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

kaha laṁkesa sunahu raghunāyaka koṭi siṁdhu soṣhaka tava sāyaka jadyapi tadapi nīti asi gāī binaya karia sāgara sana jāī

Translation

The lord of Lanka said, "Listen, Raghunayak: your arrow could dry up ten million oceans. Even so, good policy says you should first go and ask the ocean humbly.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Vibhishana, now Rama's adviser, gives his first counsel: try courtesy before force. This sets up the final episode of the kand.

Verse 50.5

prabhu tumhāra kulagura jaladhi kahihi upāya bichāri binu prayāsa sāgara tarihi sakala bhālu kapi dhāri

Translation

"Lord, the ocean is your family's elder; he will think of a way and tell you. Then the whole army of bears and monkeys will cross the sea without any effort."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The ocean was dug by King Sagara's sons, Rama's ancestors, hence the name "sagara" (see 1.5). That family bond is why Vibhishana expects the ocean to help.
