First Sight of Lanka

Doha 3: First Sight of Lanka

He kills the shadow-catching demoness, reaches the far shore and sees the golden, heavily guarded city of Lanka.

Verse 3.1

nisichari eka siṁdhu mahum̐ rahaī kari māyā nabhu ke khaga gahaī jīva jaṁtu je gagana uṛāhīṁ jala biloki tinha kai parichhāhīṁ

Translation

A demoness lived in the sea who caught the birds of the sky by magic. Whatever creatures flew through the air, she would look at their reflections in the water,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Tradition names her Simhika (the name Valmiki uses). Tulsidas does not name her; he describes only her trick, which works by seizing the shadow.

Verse 3.2

gahai chhāham̐ saka so na uṛāī ehi bidhi sadā gaganachara khāī soi chhala hanūmāna kaham̐ kīnhā tāsu kapaṭu kapi turatahiṁ chīnhā

Translation

and by seizing the shadow she held them so they could not fly away. In this way she always ate the creatures that moved through the sky. She tried the same trick on Hanuman, and the monkey saw through her deceit at once.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Three obstacles appear on the flight: Mainak offers comfort, Surasa sets a test, and this demoness is plain malice. Hanuman meets each differently: courtesy, cleverness and force.

Verse 3.3

tāhi māri mārutasuta bīrā bāridhi pāra gayau matidhīrā tahām̐ jāi dekhī bana sobhā guṁjata chaṁcharīka madhu lobhā

Translation

The steady-minded hero, son of the wind, killed her and crossed to the far side of the ocean. There he saw the beauty of the woods, with bees humming in their greed for honey.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

nānā taru phala phūla suhāe khaga mṛiga bṛiṁda dekhi mana bhāe saila bisāla dekhi eka āgeṁ tā para dhāi chaṛheu bhaya tyāgeṁ

Translation

Lovely trees of many kinds with fruit and flowers, and flocks of birds and herds of animals delighted his heart. Seeing a huge mountain ahead, he ran and climbed it without fear.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

umā na kachhu kapi kai adhikāī prabhu pratāpa jo kālahi khāī giri para chaṛhi laṁkā tehiṁ dekhī kahi na jāi ati durga biseṣhī

Translation

"Uma, there was no special greatness in the monkey himself; it was the Lord's glory, which devours even Death." From the top of the mountain he looked at Lanka. It was an exceptionally strong fortress, beyond description.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The Ramcharitmanas is narrated as a dialogue, with Shiva telling the story to Parvati (Uma). Shiva steps in here to remind his listener that Hanuman's feats come from Rama's power, which is also how Hanuman himself sees them.

Verse 3.6

ati utaṁga jalanidhi chahu pāsā kanaka koṭa kara parama prakāsā

Translation

It was very high, with the ocean on all sides, and its golden wall shone brilliantly.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

kanaka koṭa bichitra mani kṛita suṁdarāyatanā ghanā chauhaṭṭa haṭṭa subaṭṭa bīthīṁ chāru pura bahu bidhi banā gaja bāji khachchara nikara padachara ratha barūthanhi ko ganai bahurūpa nisichara jūtha atibala sena baranata nahiṁ banai

Translation

The golden wall is studded with wonderful gems, and inside it stand many beautiful mansions. The city is laid out handsomely in every way, with crossroads, markets, fine roads and lanes. Who could count its herds of elephants, horses and mules, its foot soldiers and crowds of chariots? The troops of demons of many shapes and their immensely strong army are beyond description.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Here the verse form changes from chaupai to chhand, a longer, more ornate metre that Tulsidas uses for set-piece descriptions. The picture of Lanka is of a rich, well-ordered and heavily defended city: the scale of the challenge.

Verse 3.8

bana bāga upabana bāṭikā sara kūpa bāpīṁ sohahīṁ nara nāga sura gaṁdharba kanyā rūpa muni mana mohahīṁ kahum̐ māla deha bisāla saila samāna atibala garjahīṁ nānā akhārenha bhirahiṁ bahubidhi eka ekanha tarjahīṁ

Translation

Woods, gardens, groves, orchards, lakes, wells and stepwells adorn it. Daughters of men, nagas, gods and gandharvas are so lovely they bewitch even sages. Here and there wrestlers with bodies huge as mountains roar with great strength; in many arenas they grapple in every style and challenge one another.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The captive daughters of men, nagas, gods and gandharvas hint at Ravana's habit of seizing women, which is exactly the crime Hanuman has come to answer.

Verse 3.9

kari jatana bhaṭa koṭinha bikaṭa tana nagara chahum̐ disi rachchhahīṁ kahum̐ mahiṣha mānuṣha dhenu khara aja khala nisāchara bhachchhahīṁ ehi lāgi tulasīdāsa inha kī kathā kachhu eka hai kahī raghubīra sara tīratha sarīranhi tyāgi gati paihahiṁ sahī

Translation

Millions of fearsome warriors guard the city carefully on all four sides. In places, wicked demons eat buffaloes, humans, cows, donkeys and goats. Tulsidas has told a little of their story because they will surely reach the highest state, giving up their bodies at the sacred ford of Raghubir's arrows.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

A striking theological turn: Tulsidas describes the demons because Rama's arrows will be a tirtha (a sacred place of pilgrimage) for them. To die at Rama's hand is liberation, so even the villains are on their way to salvation.

Verse 3.10

pura rakhavāre dekhi bahu kapi mana kīnha bichāra ati laghu rūpa dharauṁ nisi nagara karauṁ paisāra

Translation

Seeing the many guards of the city, the monkey thought, "I will take a very small form and slip into the city at night."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Once again intelligence before force: a spy enters quietly by night.
