Sundarkand — Doha 26

Lanka Burns

Doha 26: Lanka Burns

He burns the whole city, sparing only Vibhishana's house, and cools his tail in the sea.

Verse 26.1

deha bisāla parama haruāī maṁdira teṁ maṁdira chaṛha dhāī jarai nagara bhā loga bihālā jhapaṭa lapaṭa bahu koṭi karālā

Translation

His body was huge yet utterly light; he ran leaping from palace to palace. The city burned and the people were in agony, as millions of terrible flames leapt and lashed.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

tāta mātu hā sunia pukārā ehiṁ avasara ko hamahi ubārā hama jo kahā yaha kapi nahiṁ hoī bānara rūpa dhareṁ sura koī

Translation

Cries of "Father! Mother! Help!" could be heard: "Who will save us now?" "We said this was no monkey; it is some god in the form of a monkey!"

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sādhu avagyā kara phalu aisā jarai nagara anātha kara jaisā jārā nagaru nimiṣha eka māhīṁ eka bibhīṣhana kara gṛiha nāhīṁ

Translation

"This is the result of insulting a holy man: the city burns as if it had no protector." He burned the city in the blink of an eye, all except Vibhishana's house.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The citizens themselves name the cause: the insult to a sadhu. Vibhishana's house, marked with Rama's weapons and tulsi in doha 5, survives the fire.

Verse 26.4

tākara dūta anala jehiṁ sirijā jarā na so tehi kārana girijā ulaṭi palaṭi laṁkā saba jārī kūdi parā puni siṁdhu majhārī

Translation

"Girija, it did not burn because he was the messenger of the one who created fire itself." He burned all of Lanka, turning this way and that, and then jumped into the middle of the sea.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Shiva answers the obvious question: why was Hanuman himself not burned? The fire's creator protects his messenger.

Verse 26.5

pūm̐chha bujhāi khoi śhrama dhari laghu rūpa bahori janakasutā keṁ āgeṁ ṭhāṛha bhayau kara jori

Translation

He put out his tail, shook off his weariness, took his small form again, and stood before Janaka's daughter with folded hands.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
