Rama's Message

Doha 15: Rama's Message

Hanuman delivers Rama's intimate message of separation: "my mind is always with you."

Verse 15.1

कहेउ राम बियोग तव सीता। मो कहुँ सकल भए बिपरीता॥ नव तरु किसलय मनहुँ कृसानू। कालनिसा सम निसि ससि भानू॥ १ ॥

kaheu rāma biyoga tava sītā mo kahum̐ sakala bhae biparītā nava taru kisalaya manahum̐ kṛisānū kālanisā sama nisi sasi bhānū

Translation

"Rama said: 'Sita, in separation from you everything has turned against me. The new leaves on the trees are like fire, the night like the night of doom, and the moon like the sun.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"राम ने कहा है: 'हे सीता! तुम्हारे वियोग में मेरे लिए सब कुछ उलटा हो गया है। पेड़ों के नए पत्ते मानो अग्नि हैं, रात कालरात्रि जैसी है, और चंद्रमा सूर्य जैसा।

Commentary

Rama's message mirrors exactly what Sita said to the Ashoka tree in doha 12: new leaves like fire, a burning moon. Without knowing it, the two separated lovers have been feeling the same thing.

Verse 15.2

कुबलय बिपिन कुंत बन सरिसा। बारिद तपत तेल जनु बरिसा॥ जे हित रहे करत तेइ पीरा। उरग स्वास सम त्रिबिध समीरा॥ २ ॥

kubalaya bipina kuṁta bana sarisā bārida tapata tela janu barisā je hita rahe karata tei pīrā uraga svāsa sama tribidha samīrā

Translation

"'Beds of lotuses are like forests of spears, and the clouds seem to rain boiling oil. Those things that used to comfort me now cause pain, and the cool, gentle, fragrant breeze is like a snake's breath.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"'कमलों के वन भालों के वन जैसे हैं, बादल मानो खौलता तेल बरसाते हैं। जो सुख देते थे वे ही पीड़ा देने लगे हैं, और शीतल, मंद, सुगंधित पवन साँप की साँस जैसा लगता है।

Commentary

Tribidha samira, the "threefold breeze" (cool, gentle and fragrant), is the classic pleasant wind of Indian poetry. In separation, every pleasant thing becomes its opposite.

Verse 15.3

कहेहू तें कछु दुख घटि होई। काहि कहौं यह जान न कोई॥ तत्व प्रेम कर मम अरु तोरा। जानत प्रिया एकु मनु मोरा॥ ३ ॥

kahehū teṁ kachhu dukha ghaṭi hoī kāhi kahauṁ yaha jāna na koī tatva prema kara mama aru torā jānata priyā eku manu morā

Translation

"'Telling one's sorrow eases it a little, but whom can I tell? No one would understand. Only my mind, dear one, knows the truth of the love between you and me,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"'कहने से दुख कुछ कम होता है, पर किससे कहूँ? यह कोई नहीं जानता। हे प्रिये! मेरे और तुम्हारे प्रेम का तत्व केवल मेरा मन जानता है,

Verse 15.4

सो मनु सदा रहत तोहि पाहीं। जानु प्रीति रसु एतनेहि माहीं॥ प्रभु संदेसु सुनत बैदेही। मगन प्रेम तन सुधि नहिं तेही॥ ४ ॥

so manu sadā rahata tohi pāhīṁ jānu prīti rasu etanehi māhīṁ prabhu saṁdesu sunata baidehī magana prema tana sudhi nahiṁ tehī

Translation

"'and that mind is always with you. Know the whole essence of love from this alone.'" Hearing the Lord's message, Vaidehi was so absorbed in love that she lost all awareness of her body.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"'और वह मन सदा तुम्हारे पास रहता है। प्रेम का सारा रस बस इतने में समझ लो।'" प्रभु का संदेश सुनते ही वैदेही प्रेम में ऐसी मग्न हो गईं कि उन्हें शरीर की सुध न रही।

Commentary

The message ends with its simplest and most intimate line: my mind is always with you. In the Manas, Rama the Supreme Lord speaks here simply as a husband who misses his wife.

Verse 15.5

कह कपि हृदयँ धीर धरु माता। सुमिरु राम सेवक सुखदाता॥ उर आनहु रघुपति प्रभुताई। सुनि मम बचन तजहु कदराई॥ ५ ॥

kaha kapi hṛidayam̐ dhīra dharu mātā sumiru rāma sevaka sukhadātā ura ānahu raghupati prabhutāī suni mama bachana tajahu kadarāī

Translation

The monkey said, "Mother, take heart. Remember Rama, who brings joy to his servants. Bring Raghupati's power to mind, and hearing my words, give up your fear.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

कपि बोले, "हे माता! हृदय में धीरज धरिए। सेवकों को सुख देने वाले राम का स्मरण कीजिए। श्री रघुनाथ जी की प्रभुता को हृदय में लाइए, और मेरी बात सुनकर कायरता छोड़ दीजिए।

Verse 15.6

निसिचर निकर पतंग सम रघुपति बान कृसानु। जननी हृदयँ धीर धरु जरे निसाचर जानु॥ १५ ॥

nisichara nikara pataṁga sama raghupati bāna kṛisānu jananī hṛidayam̐ dhīra dharu jare nisāchara jānu

Translation

"The hordes of demons are like moths, and Raghupati's arrows are fire. Mother, take heart: count the demons as already burned."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"राक्षसों के समूह पतंगों जैसे हैं और श्री रघुनाथ जी के बाण अग्नि जैसे। हे माता! हृदय में धीरज धरिए, राक्षसों को जला हुआ ही समझिए।"
