The Embrace

Doha 46: The Embrace

Rama embraces him, calls him lord of Lanka, and asks how a good man survives among the wicked.

Verse 46.1

अस कहि करत दंडवत देखा। तुरत उठे प्रभु हरष बिसेषा॥ दीन बचन सुनि प्रभु मन भावा। भुज बिसाल गहि हृदयँ लगावा॥ १ ॥

asa kahi karata daṁḍavata dekhā turata uṭhe prabhu haraṣha biseṣhā dīna bachana suni prabhu mana bhāvā bhuja bisāla gahi hṛidayam̐ lagāvā

Translation

Saying this, he prostrated himself full-length. The Lord saw it and rose at once, especially glad. Hearing his humble words, the Lord was pleased, and with his long arms he drew him to his heart.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

यह कहकर उन्होंने दंडवत प्रणाम किया। प्रभु ने देखा और विशेष हर्ष के साथ तुरंत उठे। दीन वचन सुनकर प्रभु के मन को अच्छा लगा, और उन्होंने अपनी विशाल भुजाओं से पकड़कर उन्हें हृदय से लगा लिया।

Verse 46.2

अनुज सहित मिलि ढिग बैठारी। बोले बचन भगत भय हारी॥ कहु लंकेस सहित परिवारा। कुसल कुठाहर बास तुम्हारा॥ २ ॥

anuja sahita mili ḍhiga baiṭhārī bole bachana bhagata bhaya hārī kahu laṁkesa sahita parivārā kusala kuṭhāhara bāsa tumhārā

Translation

With his brother he embraced him and seated him close by. The one who removes his devotees' fear said, "Lord of Lanka, tell me, are you and your family well? You live in a bad place.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

छोटे भाई सहित गले मिलकर उन्हें पास बैठाया, और भक्तों का भय हरने वाले प्रभु बोले, "हे लंकेश! परिवार सहित अपनी कुशल बताओ। तुम्हारा निवास बुरी जगह पर है।

Commentary

Rama calls him "Lankesa," lord of Lanka, the moment they meet. Before anything has been said about a kingdom, he is already treated as Lanka's rightful ruler.

Verse 46.3

खल मंडली बसहु दिनु राती। सखा धरम निबहइ केहि भाँती॥ मैं जानउँ तुम्हारि सब रीती। अति नय निपुन न भाव अनीती॥ ३ ॥

khala maṁḍalī basahu dinu rātī sakhā dharama nibahai kehi bhām̐tī maiṁ jānaum̐ tumhāri saba rītī ati naya nipuna na bhāva anītī

Translation

"You live day and night among the wicked; friend, how do you manage to keep to dharma? I know all your ways: you are deeply skilled in good conduct and dislike wrongdoing.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"दिन-रात दुष्टों की मंडली में रहते हो, हे मित्र! तुम्हारा धर्म किस प्रकार निभता है? मैं तुम्हारी सब रीति जानता हूँ, तुम नीति में बहुत निपुण हो, तुम्हें अनीति अच्छी नहीं लगती।

Verse 46.4

बरु भल बास नरक कर ताता। दुष्ट संग जनि देइ बिधाता॥ अब पद देखि कुसल रघुराया। जौं तुम्ह कीन्हि जानि जन दाया॥ ४ ॥

baru bhala bāsa naraka kara tātā duṣhṭa saṁga jani dei bidhātā aba pada dekhi kusala raghurāyā jauṁ tumha kīnhi jāni jana dāyā

Translation

"Better to live in hell, dear one, than for fate to give one the company of the wicked." "Now that I have seen your feet, Raghurai, I am well, since you have shown kindness to me, knowing me as your own.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे तात! नरक में रहना भले ही अच्छा है, पर विधाता दुष्टों का संग न दे।" (विभीषण बोले) "हे रघुनाथ जी! अब आपके चरणों के दर्शन करके कुशल है, क्योंकि आपने अपना सेवक जानकर मुझ पर दया की है।

Verse 46.5

तब लगि कुसल न जीव कहुँ सपनेहुँ मन बिश्राम। जब लगि भजत न राम कहुँ सोक धाम तजि काम॥ ४६ ॥

taba lagi kusala na jīva kahum̐ sapanehum̐ mana biśhrāma jaba lagi bhajata na rāma kahum̐ soka dhāma taji kāma

Translation

"No soul is well, nor does the mind find rest even in dreams, until it gives up desire, the home of sorrow, and worships Rama.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"तब तक जीव की कुशल नहीं और न सपने में भी मन को विश्राम मिलता है, जब तक वह शोक के घर काम (वासना) को छोड़कर राम को नहीं भजता।
