Sundarkand — Doha 4

Lankini

Doha 4: Lankini

The city's guardian challenges him; one blow reminds her of Brahma's prophecy, and she praises the company of the good.

Verse 4.1

masaka samāna rūpa kapi dharī laṁkahi chaleu sumiri naraharī nāma laṁkinī eka nisicharī so kaha chalesi mohi niṁdarī

Translation

Taking a form as small as a mosquito, the monkey set out for Lanka, remembering the Lord who took the man-lion form. A demoness named Lankini said, "Where do you think you're going, ignoring me?

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Narahari, "the man-lion," is Vishnu as Narasimha, who protected his devotee Prahlada. Lankini is the guardian spirit of the city, Lanka personified.

Verse 4.2

jānehi nahīṁ maramu saṭha morā mora ahāra jahām̐ lagi chorā muṭhikā eka mahā kapi hanī rudhira bamata dharanīṁ ḍhanamanī

Translation

"You fool, don't you know my secret? Every thief around here is my food." The great monkey struck her a single blow of his fist; she vomited blood and toppled to the ground.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

puni saṁbhāri uṭhī so laṁkā jori pāni kara binaya sasaṁkā jaba rāvanahi brahma bara dīnhā chalata biraṁchi kahā mohi chīnhā

Translation

Then Lanka picked herself up and, folding her hands, pleaded fearfully: "When Brahma gave Ravana his boon, as he was leaving he gave me a sign to recognise:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

bikala hosi taiṁ kapi keṁ māre taba jānesu nisichara saṁghāre tāta mora ati punya bahūtā dekheum̐ nayana rāma kara dūtā

Translation

"'When you are shaken by a monkey's blow, know that the demons are about to be destroyed.' Dear one, my merit must be very great, for I have seen Rama's messenger with my own eyes.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The blow turns Lankini from guard to devotee. In the Manas, even a brief contact with Rama's messenger can transform someone, and she counts the meeting as the fruit of her merit.

Verse 4.5

tāta svarga apabarga sukha dharia tulā eka aṁga tūla na tāhi sakala mili jo sukha lava satasaṁga

Translation

"Dear one, put heaven and liberation together with all their joys on one side of a scale; all of that together does not equal the joy of a single moment of satsang."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

One of the best-known dohas of the Sundarkand, and it comes, surprisingly, from a demoness. Satsang, the company of the good, is valued above even liberation (apavarga), which is a characteristic claim of Tulsidas's bhakti.
