Flattering Counsel

Doha 37: Flattering Counsel

Ravana mocks her fears; his ministers flatter him, and Tulsidas warns what flattery destroys.

Verse 37.1

श्रवन सुनी सठ ता करि बानी। बिहसा जगत बिदित अभिमानी॥ सभय सुभाउ नारि कर साचा। मंगल महुँ भय मन अति काचा॥ १ ॥

śhravana sunī saṭha tā kari bānī bihasā jagata bidita abhimānī sabhaya subhāu nāri kara sāchā maṁgala mahum̐ bhaya mana ati kāchā

Translation

The fool heard her words and laughed, that world-famous egotist: "It really is a woman's nature to be fearful. Even in good times, your mind is very weak.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

उसकी बात कानों से सुनकर वह जगत-प्रसिद्ध अभिमानी मूर्ख हँसा, "स्त्री का स्वभाव सचमुच डरपोक होता है। मंगल में भी तुम्हारा मन भय से बहुत कच्चा रहता है।

Commentary

Ravana dismisses good advice by dismissing the adviser: it is only a woman's fear. The Manas does not agree, since Mandodari is right.

Verse 37.2

जौं आवइ मर्कट कटकाई। जिअहिं बिचारे निसिचर खाई॥ कंपहिं लोकप जाकीं त्रासा। तासु नारि सभीत बड़ि हासा॥ २ ॥

jauṁ āvai markaṭa kaṭakāī jiahiṁ bichāre nisichara khāī kaṁpahiṁ lokapa jākīṁ trāsā tāsu nāri sabhīta baṛi hāsā

Translation

"If the monkey army comes, the poor demons will get something to eat. The guardians of the worlds tremble in fear of me, and my wife is afraid; what a joke!"

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"यदि बंदरों की सेना आएगी, तो बेचारे राक्षस उन्हें खाकर जीएँगे। जिसके डर से लोकपाल काँपते हैं, उसकी पत्नी डरती है, यह बड़ी हँसी की बात है।"

Verse 37.3

अस कहि बिहसि ताहि उर लाई। चलेउ सभाँ ममता अधिकाई॥ मंदोदरी हृदयँ कर चिंता। भयउ कंत पर बिधि बिपरीता॥ ३ ॥

asa kahi bihasi tāhi ura lāī chaleu sabhām̐ mamatā adhikāī maṁdodarī hṛidayam̐ kara chiṁtā bhayau kaṁta para bidhi biparītā

Translation

Saying this he laughed, hugged her to his chest, and went off to his court, his pride swollen further. Mandodari worried in her heart: "Fate has turned against my husband."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

यह कहकर उसने हँसकर उन्हें हृदय से लगाया और ममता (अहंकार) बढ़ाकर सभा में चला गया। मंदोदरी हृदय में चिंता करने लगीं कि पति पर विधाता उलटा हो गया है।

Verse 37.4

बैठेउ सभाँ खबरि असि पाई। सिंधु पार सेना सब आई॥ बूझेसि सचिव उचित मत कहहू। ते सब हँसे मष्ट करि रहहू॥ ४ ॥

baiṭheu sabhām̐ khabari asi pāī siṁdhu pāra senā saba āī būjhesi sachiva uchita mata kahahū te saba ham̐se maṣhṭa kari rahahū

Translation

As he sat in court he received news that the whole army had come to the far shore of the sea. He asked his ministers, "Give me your proper advice." They all laughed: "Stay calm.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

सभा में बैठते ही उसे ऐसी खबर मिली कि सारी सेना समुद्र के उस पार आ गई है। उसने मंत्रियों से पूछा, "उचित सलाह दो।" वे सब हँसे और बोले, "चुप रहिए (चिंता की कोई बात नहीं)।

Verse 37.5

जितेहु सुरासुर तब श्रम नाहीं। नर बानर केहि लेखे माहीं॥ ५ ॥

jitehu surāsura taba śhrama nāhīṁ nara bānara kehi lekhe māhīṁ

Translation

"You conquered gods and demons without any effort; where do men and monkeys figure in the reckoning?"

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"आपने देवताओं और दैत्यों को जीता, तब भी कोई परिश्रम नहीं हुआ। मनुष्य और वानर किस गिनती में हैं?"

Verse 37.6

सचिव बैद गुर तीनि जौं प्रिय बोलहिं भय आस। राज धर्म तन तीनि कर होइ बेगिहीं नास॥ ३७ ॥

sachiva baida gura tīni jauṁ priya bolahiṁ bhaya āsa rāja dharma tana tīni kara hoi begihīṁ nāsa

Translation

If a minister, a physician and a guru, these three, speak only to please, out of fear or in hope of reward, then kingdom, health and dharma, these three, are quickly destroyed.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

मंत्री, वैद्य और गुरु, ये तीनों यदि भय या लाभ की आशा से केवल प्रिय (मीठी) बात कहें, तो राज्य, शरीर और धर्म, इन तीनों का जल्दी ही नाश हो जाता है।

Commentary

A famous piece of practical wisdom, often quoted far outside its setting. Each flatterer is matched with what he ruins: the minister with the kingdom, the doctor with the body, the guru with dharma.
