Chandrahasa

Doha 10: Chandrahasa

Ravana draws his sword; Sita welcomes it. Mandodari restrains him and he sets a one-month deadline.

Verse 10.1

sītā taiṁ mama kṛita apamānā kaṭihaum̐ tava sira kaṭhina kṛipānā nāhiṁ ta sapadi mānu mama bānī sumukhi hoti na ta jīvana hānī

Translation

"Sita, you have insulted me. I will cut off your head with my cruel sword. Otherwise obey me at once. O lovely one, if not, you lose your life."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

syāma saroja dāma sama suṁdara prabhu bhuja kari kara sama dasakaṁdhara so bhuja kaṁṭha ki tava asi ghorā sunu saṭha asa pravāna pana morā

Translation

"Ten-headed one, my Lord's arms are beautiful as a garland of dark blue lotuses and long as an elephant's trunk. Either that arm will be around my neck or your terrible sword; listen, wretch, that is my solemn vow."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Sita turns Ravana's threat into her own vow: only two things will ever touch her neck, Rama's arm or death. She is not bargaining for her life; she has already decided.

Verse 10.3

chaṁdrahāsa haru mama paritāpaṁ raghupati biraha anala saṁjātaṁ sītala nisita bahasi bara dhārā kaha sītā haru mama dukha bhārā

Translation

"O Chandrahasa, take away my burning pain, born of the fire of separation from Raghupati. You are cool, sharp, and carry a fine edge," said Sita; "take away the heavy weight of my sorrow."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Chandrahasa, "moon-laughter," is the name of Ravana's sword, a gift from Shiva. Sita addresses the weapon itself, in lines that mix Sanskrit endings (paritapam, sanjatam) into the Awadhi, and welcomes it as a cool release from the heat of separation.

Verse 10.4

sunata bachana puni mārana dhāvā mayatanayām̐ kahi nīti bujhāvā kahesi sakala nisicharinha bolāī sītahi bahu bidhi trāsahu jāī

Translation

Hearing this, he rushed again to kill her, but Maya's daughter (Mandodari) reasoned with him about what was right. He called all the demonesses together and told them, "Go and terrify Sita in every way you can.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Mandodari, Ravana's chief queen, appears here for the first time in the kand. She will return in doha 36 with a longer plea, and each time she speaks for sense and restraint.

Verse 10.5

māsa divasa mahum̐ kahā na mānā tau maiṁ mārabi kāṛhi kṛipānā

Translation

"If she has not obeyed me within a month, I will draw my sword and kill her."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The one-month deadline hangs over the rest of Sita's story and gives Hanuman's visit its urgency.

Verse 10.6

bhavana gayau dasakaṁdhara ihām̐ pisāchini bṛiṁda sītahi trāsa dekhāvahiṁ dharahiṁ rūpa bahu maṁda

Translation

The ten-headed one went back to his palace. Here the crowd of demonesses took on many hideous forms and tried to frighten Sita.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
