Mandodari's Plea

Doha 36: Mandodari's Plea

Lanka lives in fear; Ravana's queen begs him to send Sita back.

Verse 36.1

उहाँ निसाचर रहहिं ससंका। जब तें जारि गयउ कपि लंका॥ निज निज गृहँ सब करहिं बिचारा। नहिं निसिचर कुल केर उबारा॥ १ ॥

uhām̐ nisāchara rahahiṁ sasaṁkā jaba teṁ jāri gayau kapi laṁkā nija nija gṛiham̐ saba karahiṁ bichārā nahiṁ nisichara kula kera ubārā

Translation

Over there, the demons had lived in fear ever since the monkey burned Lanka and left. Each in his own house thought, "There is no saving the demon race.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

उधर, जब से कपि लंका जलाकर गए, तब से राक्षस डरे रहते हैं। अपने-अपने घरों में सब विचार करते हैं कि अब राक्षस कुल का बचाव नहीं है।

Commentary

The scene shifts to Lanka and changes tone: after the joy of Rama's camp comes the dread inside Ravana's city.

Verse 36.2

जासु दूत बल बरनि न जाई। तेहि आएँ पुर कवन भलाई॥ दूतिन्ह सन सुनि पुरजन बानी। मंदोदरी अधिक अकुलानी॥ २ ॥

jāsu dūta bala barani na jāī tehi āem̐ pura kavana bhalāī dūtinha sana suni purajana bānī maṁdodarī adhika akulānī

Translation

"If his messenger's strength is beyond description, what good can come to the city when he himself arrives?" Hearing from her maids what the citizens were saying, Mandodari grew still more anxious.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"जिसके दूत का बल वर्णन से परे है, उसके स्वयं नगर में आने पर क्या भलाई होगी?" दूतियों से नगरवासियों की यह बात सुनकर मंदोदरी और भी व्याकुल हो गईं।

Verse 36.3

रहसि जोरि कर पति पग लागी। बोली बचन नीति रस पागी॥ कंत करष हरि सन परिहरहू। मोर कहा अति हित हियँ धरहू॥ ३ ॥

rahasi jori kara pati paga lāgī bolī bachana nīti rasa pāgī kaṁta karaṣha hari sana pariharahū mora kahā ati hita hiyam̐ dharahū

Translation

In private, with folded hands, she fell at her husband's feet and spoke words steeped in wisdom: "Beloved, give up your enmity with Hari. Take my words to heart, for they are for your good.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

samujhata jāsu dūta kai karanī sravahiṁ garbha rajanīchara dharanī tāsu nāri nija sachiva bolāī paṭhavahu kaṁta jo chahahu bhalāī

Translation

"Just thinking of what his messenger did, the demons' wives miscarry. My lord, if you want good to come of this, call your minister and send his wife back with him.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

tava kula kamala bipina dukhadāī sītā sīta nisā sama āī sunahu nātha sītā binu dīnheṁ hita na tumhāra saṁbhu aja kīnheṁ

Translation

"Sita has come like a winter night that withers the lotus-forest of your family. Listen, my lord: until you give Sita back, not even Shambhu and Brahma can do you any good.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"सीता आपके कुल रूपी कमलवन को दुख देने वाली जाड़े की रात की तरह आई है। हे नाथ! सुनिए, सीता को लौटाए बिना शंभु और ब्रह्मा के किए भी आपका भला नहीं हो सकता।

Commentary

A wordplay: Sita and sita (cold) sound the same in Hindi, so "sita sita nisa" means "Sita, a cold night." Lotuses shrivel in winter frost, and so will Ravana's family.

Verse 36.6

राम बान अहि गन सरिस निकर निसाचर भेक। जब लगि ग्रसत न तब लगि जतनु करहु तजि टेक॥ ३६ ॥

rāma bāna ahi gana sarisa nikara nisāchara bheka jaba lagi grasata na taba lagi jatanu karahu taji ṭeka

Translation

"Rama's arrows are like a swarm of snakes and the demon hordes like frogs. Before they are swallowed up, give up your stubbornness and do something."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"राम के बाण साँपों के समूह जैसे हैं और राक्षसों के झुंड मेंढकों जैसे। जब तक वे उन्हें निगल नहीं लेते, तब तक हठ छोड़कर कोई उपाय कर लीजिए।"
