Ravana's Questions

Doha 53: Ravana's Questions

Ravana mockingly asks Shuka about Vibhishana, the army and the "ascetics."

Verse 53.1

तुरत नाइ लछिमन पद माथा। चले दूत बरनत गुन गाथा॥ कहत राम जसु लंकाँ आए। रावन चरन सीस तिन्ह नाए॥ १ ॥

turata nāi lachhimana pada māthā chale dūta baranata guna gāthā kahata rāma jasu laṁkām̐ āe rāvana charana sīsa tinha nāe

Translation

At once bowing their heads at Lakshman's feet, the spies set off, reciting the story of his virtues. Telling of Rama's glory as they went, they came to Lanka and bowed their heads at Ravana's feet.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

दूत तुरंत लक्ष्मण जी के चरणों में सिर नवाकर उनके गुणों की गाथा कहते हुए चले। राम का यश कहते हुए वे लंका आए और रावण के चरणों में सिर नवाया।

Verse 53.2

बिहसि दसानन पूँछी बाता। कहसि न सुक आपनि कुसलाता॥ पुनि कहु खबरि बिभीषन केरी। जाहि मृत्यु आई अति नेरी॥ २ ॥

bihasi dasānana pūm̐chhī bātā kahasi na suka āpani kusalātā puni kahu khabari bibhīṣhana kerī jāhi mṛityu āī ati nerī

Translation

The ten-headed one laughed and asked, "Shuka, why don't you tell me how you are? And then give me news of Vibhishana, whose death has come very near.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

रावण ने हँसकर पूछा, "शुक! अपनी कुशल क्यों नहीं कहता? फिर विभीषण का समाचार बता, जिसकी मृत्यु बहुत निकट आ गई है।

Commentary

Shuka is the name of the chief spy. Ravana's tone is mocking and falsely confident; the questions that follow sneer at everyone on Rama's side.

Verse 53.3

करत राज लंका सठ त्यागी। होइहि जब कर कीट अभागी॥ पुनि कहु भालु कीस कटकाई। कठिन काल प्रेरित चलि आई॥ ३ ॥

karata rāja laṁkā saṭha tyāgī hoihi jaba kara kīṭa abhāgī puni kahu bhālu kīsa kaṭakāī kaṭhina kāla prerita chali āī

Translation

"The fool left Lanka where he was ruling; the wretch will be crushed like a worm on a barley stalk. Then tell me about the army of bears and monkeys that has come here driven by cruel Death,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"मूर्ख ने राज करते हुए लंका छोड़ दी, वह अभागा अब जौ के कीड़े की तरह (पिसकर) मरेगा। फिर भालुओं और वानरों की सेना का हाल बता, जो कठिन काल की प्रेरणा से चली आई है,

Commentary

"Like a worm in the barley": when grain is milled, the insects in it are ground up too. Ravana means that Vibhishana will be destroyed along with Rama's side.

Verse 53.4

जिन्ह के जीवन कर रखवारा। भयउ मृदुल चित सिंधु बिचारा॥ कहु तपसिन्ह कै बात बहोरी। जिन्ह के हृदयँ त्रास अति मोरी॥ ४ ॥

jinha ke jīvana kara rakhavārā bhayau mṛidula chita siṁdhu bichārā kahu tapasinha kai bāta bahorī jinha ke hṛidayam̐ trāsa ati morī

Translation

"whose lives are protected only by the poor ocean, which has a soft heart. And then tell me about those ascetics, whose hearts are so very afraid of me.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"जिनके जीवन का रक्षक बेचारा कोमल हृदय वाला समुद्र बना हुआ है। फिर उन तपस्वियों की बात बता, जिनके हृदय में मेरा बड़ा डर है।

Verse 53.5

की भइ भेंट कि फिरि गए श्रवन सुजसु सुनि मोर। कहसि न रिपु दल तेज बल बहुत चकित चित तोर॥ ५३ ॥

kī bhai bheṁṭa ki phiri gae śhravana sujasu suni mora kahasi na ripu dala teja bala bahuta chakita chita tora

Translation

"Did you meet them, or did they turn back when they heard of my fame? Why don't you tell me about the enemy army's strength and spirit? Your mind seems quite stunned."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"उनसे भेंट हुई, या वे कानों से मेरा सुयश सुनकर लौट गए? शत्रु सेना का तेज और बल क्यों नहीं बताता? तेरा चित्त बहुत चकित-सा दिख रहा है।"
