Rama Is Not Merely a King

Doha 39: Rama Is Not Merely a King

He tells Ravana who Rama really is and passes on the sage Pulastya's advice.

Verse 39.1

tāta rāma nahiṁ nara bhūpālā bhuvanesvara kālahu kara kālā brahma anāmaya aja bhagavaṁtā byāpaka ajita anādi anaṁtā

Translation

"Brother, Rama is not merely a human king. He is lord of the worlds, the death even of Death: Brahman, untouched by sickness, unborn, the Lord, all-pervading, unconquerable, without beginning or end.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

go dvija dhenu deva hitakārī kṛipā siṁdhu mānuṣha tanudhārī jana raṁjana bhaṁjana khala brātā beda dharma rachchhaka sunu bhrātā

Translation

"He is the benefactor of earth, brahmins, cows and gods, the ocean of mercy who has taken a human body. Listen, brother: he delights his people, crushes the hosts of the wicked, and protects the Vedas and dharma.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

tāhi bayaru taji nāia māthā pranatārati bhaṁjana raghunāthā dehu nātha prabhu kahum̐ baidehī bhajahu rāma binu hetu sanehī

Translation

"Give up your enmity and bow your head to him; Raghunath destroys the distress of those who take refuge. Master, give Vaidehi back to the Lord and worship Rama, who loves without any reason.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sarana gaem̐ prabhu tāhu na tyāgā bisva droha kṛita agha jehi lāgā jāsu nāma traya tāpa nasāvana soi prabhu pragaṭa samujhu jiyam̐ rāvana

Translation

"The Lord does not abandon even one burdened with the sin of harming the whole world, once he comes for refuge. Ravana, understand in your heart that the Lord whose name destroys the three kinds of suffering has now appeared in person.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The three tapas (kinds of suffering) are those caused by one's own body and mind, by other beings, and by natural and supernatural forces. Vibhishana repeats Hanuman's offer from 22.6: even Ravana could still be accepted.

Verse 39.5

bāra bāra pada lāgaum̐ binaya karaum̐ dasasīsa parihari māna moha mada bhajahu kosalādhīsa

Translation

"Ten-headed one, again and again I touch your feet and plead: give up pride, delusion and arrogance, and worship the Lord of Kosala."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

muni pulasti nija siṣhya sana kahi paṭhaī yaha bāta turata so maiṁ prabhu sana kahī pāi suavasaru tāta

Translation

"The sage Pulastya sent this message through his own disciple, and I have told it to you at once, brother, having found a good moment."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Vibhishana adds the authority of their grandfather, the sage Pulastya, whom Hanuman also invoked in 23.1. Groups 39, 49 and 56 each end with a pair of dohas, marked (क) and (ख).
