Natural Heroes

Doha 55: Natural Heroes

Shuka says every monkey could defeat Ravana, and they only wait for Rama's command.

Verse 55.1

e kapi saba sugrīva samānā inha sama koṭinha ganai ko nānā rāma kṛipām̐ atulita bala tinhahīṁ tṛina samāna trailokahi ganahīṁ

Translation

"All these monkeys are Sugriva's equals, and there are millions like them; who could count them? By Rama's grace they have unmatched strength and reckon the three worlds as mere straw.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

asa maiṁ sunā śhravana dasakaṁdhara paduma aṭhāraha jūthapa baṁdara nātha kaṭaka maham̐ so kapi nāhīṁ jo na tumhahi jītai rana māhīṁ

Translation

"Ten-necked one, I have heard it said that there are eighteen padmas of monkey troop-leaders. Master, there is no monkey in that army who could not beat you in battle.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

A padma is a traditional number of astronomical size, usually taken as a thousand million million or more. The figure is meant to be uncountable.

Verse 55.3

parama krodha mījahiṁ saba hāthā āyasu pai na dehiṁ raghunāthā soṣhahiṁ siṁdhu sahita jhaṣha byālā pūrahiṁ na ta bhari kudhara bisālā

Translation

"They all wring their hands in great anger, but Raghunath does not give them the order. 'We'll dry up the ocean with its fish and snakes, or else fill it up with huge mountains!'

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

mardi garda milavahiṁ dasasīsā aisei bachana kahahiṁ saba kīsā garjahiṁ tarjahiṁ sahaja asaṁkā mānahum̐ grasana chahata hahiṁ laṁkā

Translation

"'We'll grind the ten-headed one to dust!' That is the kind of thing all the monkeys are saying. They roar and threaten, fearless by nature, as if they wanted to swallow Lanka whole.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sahaja sūra kapi bhālu saba puni sira para prabhu rāma rāvana kāla koṭi kahum̐ jīti sakahiṁ saṁgrāma

Translation

"The monkeys and bears are all natural heroes, and above them is their Lord, Rama. Ravana, they could win a battle against ten million Deaths."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
