Good Sense and Bad

Doha 40: Good Sense and Bad

The elder Malyavan agrees and is sent away; Vibhishana makes a final plea.

Verse 40.1

माल्यवंत अति सचिव सयाना। तासु बचन सुनि अति सुख माना॥ तात अनुज तव नीति बिभूषन। सो उर धरहु जो कहत बिभीषन॥ १ ॥

mālyavaṁta ati sachiva sayānā tāsu bachana suni ati sukha mānā tāta anuja tava nīti bibhūṣhana so ura dharahu jo kahata bibhīṣhana

Translation

Malyavan, a very wise minister, was greatly pleased to hear his words. "Son, your younger brother is an ornament of good policy. Take to heart what Vibhishana says."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

माल्यवान नाम का एक बहुत बुद्धिमान मंत्री था, उसने उनकी बात सुनकर बड़ा सुख माना। (और कहा) "हे तात! आपका छोटा भाई नीति का भूषण है। विभीषण जो कहता है, उसे हृदय में धारण कीजिए।"

Commentary

Malyavan was Ravana's maternal grandfather and an elder statesman. With Mandodari, Vibhishana and Malyavan all agreeing, Ravana is now ignoring every wise voice around him.

Verse 40.2

रिपु उतकरष कहत सठ दोऊ। दूरि न करहु इहाँ हइ कोऊ॥ माल्यवंत गृह गयउ बहोरी। कहइ बिभीषनु पुनि कर जोरी॥ २ ॥

ripu utakaraṣha kahata saṭha doū dūri na karahu ihām̐ hai koū mālyavaṁta gṛiha gayau bahorī kahai bibhīṣhanu puni kara jorī

Translation

"These two fools are praising the enemy. Isn't anyone here going to throw them out?" Malyavan went home, and Vibhishana, with folded hands, spoke again:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sumati kumati saba keṁ ura rahahīṁ nātha purāna nigama asa kahahīṁ jahām̐ sumati taham̐ saṁpati nānā jahām̐ kumati taham̐ bipati nidānā

Translation

"Master, the Puranas and Vedas say that good sense and bad sense both dwell in everyone's heart. Where there is good sense there is prosperity of every kind; where there is bad sense, disaster is the result.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

tava ura kumati basī biparītā hita anahita mānahu ripu prītā kālarāti nisichara kula kerī tehi sītā para prīti ghanerī

Translation

"Perverse bad sense has settled in your heart, so you take good for harm and an enemy for a friend. You have fallen deeply in love with Sita, who is the night of doom for the demon race.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"आपके हृदय में उलटी कुबुद्धि आ बसी है, इसी से आप हित को अहित और शत्रु को मित्र मान रहे हैं। जो राक्षस कुल के लिए कालरात्रि है, उस सीता पर आपकी बड़ी प्रीति है।

Verse 40.5

तात चरन गहि मागउँ राखहु मोर दुलार। सीता देहु राम कहुँ अहित न होइ तुम्हार॥ ४० ॥

tāta charana gahi māgaum̐ rākhahu mora dulāra sītā dehu rāma kahum̐ ahita na hoi tumhāra

Translation

"Brother, I clasp your feet and beg you: grant my loving request. Give Sita back to Rama, and no harm will come to you."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे तात! मैं चरण पकड़कर माँगता हूँ, मेरा दुलार (प्रेम भरा आग्रह) रख लीजिए। राम को सीता लौटा दीजिए, जिससे आपका अहित न हो।"
