Meeting Vibhishana

Doha 6: Meeting Vibhishana

Vibhishana wakes saying "Rama, Rama"; Hanuman approaches him disguised as a brahmin and tells him Rama's story.

Verse 6.1

लंका निसिचर निकर निवासा। इहाँ कहाँ सज्जन कर बासा॥ मन महुँ तरक करैं कपि लागा। तेहीं समय बिभीषनु जागा॥ १ ॥

laṁkā nisichara nikara nivāsā ihām̐ kahām̐ sajjana kara bāsā mana mahum̐ taraka karaiṁ kapi lāgā tehīṁ samaya bibhīṣhanu jāgā

Translation

"Lanka is home to hordes of demons; how could a good man live here?" As the monkey began to puzzle over this, Vibhishana woke up at that very moment.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"लंका तो राक्षसों के समूह का निवास है, यहाँ सज्जन का वास कहाँ?" कपि मन में यह तर्क करने लगे, उसी समय विभीषण जाग गए।

Verse 6.2

राम राम तेहिं सुमिरन कीन्हा। हृदयँ हरष कपि सज्जन चीन्हा॥ एहि सन हठि करिहउँ पहिचानी। साधु ते होइ न कारज हानी॥ २ ॥

rāma rāma tehiṁ sumirana kīnhā hṛidayam̐ haraṣha kapi sajjana chīnhā ehi sana haṭhi karihaum̐ pahichānī sādhu te hoi na kāraja hānī

Translation

He remembered Rama, saying "Rama, Rama." Hanuman's heart rejoiced as he recognised a good man. "I will make myself known to him," he thought; "no harm to the work can come from a good man."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

उन्होंने "राम राम" कहकर स्मरण किया। हनुमान जी हृदय में प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने सज्जन को पहचान लिया। उन्होंने सोचा, "मैं इनसे आग्रहपूर्वक परिचय करूँगा, साधु से काम की हानि नहीं होती।"

Commentary

Vibhishana reveals himself not by any claim but by the name on his lips as he wakes. The first words he speaks are "Rama, Rama," and that is enough.

Verse 6.3

बिप्र रूप धरि बचन सुनाए। सुनत बिभीषन उठि तहँ आए॥ करि प्रनाम पूँछी कुसलाई। बिप्र कहहु निज कथा बुझाई॥ ३ ॥

bipra rūpa dhari bachana sunāe sunata bibhīṣhana uṭhi taham̐ āe kari pranāma pūm̐chhī kusalāī bipra kahahu nija kathā bujhāī

Translation

Taking the form of a brahmin, he called out to him. Hearing him, Vibhishana got up and came there. He bowed, asked after his welfare, and said, "Brahmin, tell me about yourself.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

ब्राह्मण का रूप धरकर उन्होंने आवाज़ दी। सुनते ही विभीषण उठकर वहाँ आए। प्रणाम करके कुशल पूछी और बोले, "हे ब्राह्मण! अपना परिचय समझाकर कहिए।

Verse 6.4

की तुम्ह हरि दासन्ह महँ कोई। मोरें हृदय प्रीति अति होई॥ की तुम्ह रामु दीन अनुरागी। आयहु मोहि करन बड़भागी॥ ४ ॥

kī tumha hari dāsanha maham̐ koī moreṁ hṛidaya prīti ati hoī kī tumha rāmu dīna anurāgī āyahu mohi karana baṛabhāgī

Translation

"Are you one of Hari's servants? For my heart feels great love for you. Or are you Rama himself, the lover of the lowly, come to bless me?"

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"क्या आप हरि के भक्तों में से कोई हैं? क्योंकि मेरे हृदय में आपके प्रति बहुत प्रेम उमड़ रहा है। या आप दीनों से प्रेम करने वाले स्वयं राम हैं, जो मुझे बड़भागी बनाने आए हैं?"

Commentary

Vibhishana's heart recognises what the disguise hides. The Manas often treats spontaneous love as a way of knowing: devotees recognise each other before they are introduced.

Verse 6.5

तब हनुमंत कही सब राम कथा निज नाम। सुनत जुगल तन पुलक मन मगन सुमिरि गुन ग्राम॥ ६ ॥

taba hanumaṁta kahī saba rāma kathā nija nāma sunata jugala tana pulaka mana magana sumiri guna grāma

Translation

Then Hanuman told him the whole story of Rama and his own name. As they listened, both of them thrilled with joy, and their minds were lost in remembering Rama's many virtues.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

तब हनुमान जी ने राम की सारी कथा और अपना नाम बताया। सुनते ही दोनों के शरीर पुलकित हो गए और राम के गुणों का स्मरण करके दोनों के मन मग्न हो गए।
