On Whose Strength?

Doha 21: On Whose Strength?

Asked on whose strength he acted, Hanuman describes Rama as the power behind all creation.

Verse 21.1

कह लंकेस कवन तैं कीसा। केहि कें बल घालेहि बन खीसा॥ की धौं श्रवन सुनेहि नहिं मोही। देखउँ अति असंक सठ तोही॥ १ ॥

kaha laṁkesa kavana taiṁ kīsā kehi keṁ bala ghālehi bana khīsā kī dhauṁ śhravana sunehi nahiṁ mohī dekhaum̐ ati asaṁka saṭha tohī

Translation

The lord of Lanka said, "Who are you, monkey? On whose strength did you wreck my grove? Have you never heard of me? You fool, I see you are quite unafraid.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

लंकापति ने कहा, "अरे बंदर! तू कौन है? किसके बल पर तूने वन उजाड़ डाला? क्या तूने कभी कानों से मेरा नाम नहीं सुना? अरे मूर्ख! मैं तुझे बड़ा निडर देख रहा हूँ।

Commentary

Ravana's two questions, "who are you" and "on whose strength," give Hanuman his opening. He will answer the second one at length before he ever gives his own name.

Verse 21.2

मारे निसिचर केहिं अपराधा। कहु सठ तोहि न प्रान कइ बाधा॥ सुनु रावन ब्रह्मांड निकाया। पाइ जासु बल बिरचति माया॥ २ ॥

māre nisichara kehiṁ aparādhā kahu saṭha tohi na prāna kai bādhā sunu rāvana brahmāṁḍa nikāyā pāi jāsu bala birachati māyā

Translation

"For what offence did you kill the demons? Tell me, fool, are you not afraid for your life?" "Listen, Ravana: he by whose strength Maya creates the countless universes,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"किस अपराध से तूने राक्षसों को मारा? बोल मूर्ख, क्या तुझे प्राणों का डर नहीं?" (हनुमान जी बोले) "सुन रावण! जिनका बल पाकर माया अनगिनत ब्रह्मांडों की रचना करती है,

Verse 21.3

जाकें बल बिरंचि हरि ईसा। पालत सृजत हरत दससीसा॥ जा बल सीस धरत सहसानन। अंडकोस समेत गिरि कानन॥ ३ ॥

jākeṁ bala biraṁchi hari īsā pālata sṛijata harata dasasīsā jā bala sīsa dharata sahasānana aṁḍakosa sameta giri kānana

Translation

"by whose strength, ten-headed one, Brahma, Hari and Shiva create, sustain and destroy; by whose strength the thousand-headed Shesha carries on his head the world with all its mountains and forests,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे दशशीश! जिनके बल से ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश सृष्टि, पालन और संहार करते हैं; जिनके बल से सहस्रमुख शेषनाग पर्वतों और वनों सहित पूरे ब्रह्मांड को सिर पर धारण करते हैं,

Commentary

Hanuman's answer to "on whose strength" is breathtaking in scope: the power he serves is the source of the Trimurti's own functions. The whole speech is a lesson in theology aimed at a king who thinks himself supreme.

Verse 21.4

धरइ जो बिबिध देह सुरत्राता। तुम्ह से सठन्ह सिखावनु दाता॥ हर कोदंड कठिन जेहिं भंजा। तेहि समेत नृप दल मद गंजा॥ ४ ॥

dharai jo bibidha deha suratrātā tumha se saṭhanha sikhāvanu dātā hara kodaṁḍa kaṭhina jehiṁ bhaṁjā tehi sameta nṛipa dala mada gaṁjā

Translation

"who takes many forms to protect the gods and teaches fools like you a lesson; who broke Shiva's mighty bow and with it crushed the pride of the assembled kings,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"जो देवताओं की रक्षा के लिए अनेक रूप धारण करते हैं और तुम जैसे मूर्खों को सीख देते हैं; जिन्होंने शिव जी का कठोर धनुष तोड़ा और उसके साथ राजाओं के समूह का घमंड भी चूर किया,

Commentary

The breaking of Shiva's bow at Sita's swayamvara stings Ravana in particular, since some tellings have him failing to lift it.

Verse 21.5

खर दूषन त्रिसिरा अरु बाली। बधे सकल अतुलित बलसाली॥ ५ ॥

khara dūṣhana trisirā aru bālī badhe sakala atulita balasālī

Translation

"who killed Khara, Dushana, Trishira and Vali, all of them warriors of unequalled strength,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"जिन्होंने खर, दूषण, त्रिशिरा और बालि जैसे अतुलनीय बलशाली वीरों को मार डाला,

Verse 21.6

जाके बल लवलेस तें जितेहु चराचर झारि। तासु दूत मैं जा करि हरि आनेहु प्रिय नारि॥ २१ ॥

jāke bala lavalesa teṁ jitehu charāchara jhāri tāsu dūta maiṁ jā kari hari ānehu priya nāri

Translation

"by a tiny fraction of whose strength you conquered the whole moving and unmoving world: I am the messenger of the one whose beloved wife you stole."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"जिनके बल के लेशमात्र से तुमने समस्त चराचर जगत को जीत लिया, और जिनकी प्रिय पत्नी को तुम हर लाए हो, मैं उन्हीं का दूत हूँ।"

Commentary

Hanuman saves the sharpest point for last: even Ravana's own power is borrowed from Rama. Only then does he say who he is, simply "his messenger."
