All by Your Glory

Doha 33: All by Your Glory

Asked how he burned Lanka, Hanuman credits everything to Rama's power.

Verse 33.1

बार बार प्रभु चहइ उठावा। प्रेम मगन तेहि उठब न भावा॥ प्रभु कर पंकज कपि कें सीसा। सुमिरि सो दसा मगन गौरीसा॥ १ ॥

bāra bāra prabhu chahai uṭhāvā prema magana tehi uṭhaba na bhāvā prabhu kara paṁkaja kapi keṁ sīsā sumiri so dasā magana gaurīsā

Translation

Again and again the Lord tried to raise him, but lost in love, he did not want to get up. The Lord's lotus hand on the monkey's head: remembering that scene, Gauri's lord (Shiva) was lost in rapture.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

प्रभु बार-बार उन्हें उठाना चाहते हैं, पर प्रेम में मग्न हनुमान जी को उठना अच्छा नहीं लगता। प्रभु का करकमल कपि के सिर पर है, उस दशा का स्मरण करके गौरीपति शिव जी भी मग्न हो गए।

Commentary

The narrator himself is overwhelmed: Shiva, telling the story, stops mid-sentence at the memory of Rama's hand on Hanuman's head. (In tradition Hanuman is himself an incarnation of Shiva, which adds a further layer.)

Verse 33.2

सावधान मन करि पुनि संकर। लागे कहन कथा अति सुंदर॥ कपि उठाई प्रभु हृदयँ लगावा। कर गहि परम निकट बैठावा॥ २ ॥

sāvadhāna mana kari puni saṁkara lāge kahana kathā ati suṁdara kapi uṭhāī prabhu hṛidayam̐ lagāvā kara gahi parama nikaṭa baiṭhāvā

Translation

Then, steadying his mind, Shankar went on telling the beautiful story. The Lord raised the monkey, embraced him, and taking his hand seated him right beside him.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

फिर मन को सावधान करके शंकर जी अत्यंत सुंदर कथा कहने लगे। प्रभु ने कपि को उठाकर हृदय से लगाया और हाथ पकड़कर अपने बिल्कुल पास बैठा लिया।

Verse 33.3

कहु कपि रावन पालित लंका। केहि बिधि दहेउ दुर्ग अति बंका॥ प्रभु प्रसन्न जाना हनुमाना। बोला बचन बिगत अभिमाना॥ ३ ॥

kahu kapi rāvana pālita laṁkā kehi bidhi daheu durga ati baṁkā prabhu prasanna jānā hanumānā bolā bachana bigata abhimānā

Translation

"Tell me, monkey, how did you burn Lanka, Ravana's fortress, so very hard to take?" Seeing that the Lord was pleased, Hanuman spoke without a trace of pride:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे कपि! बताओ, रावण के द्वारा रक्षित लंका जैसे अत्यंत दुर्गम किले को तुमने कैसे जलाया?" प्रभु को प्रसन्न जानकर हनुमान जी अभिमान रहित होकर बोले:

Verse 33.4

साखामृग कै बड़ि मनुसाई। साखा तें साखा पर जाई॥ नाघि सिंधु हाटकपुर जारा। निसिचर गन बधि बिपिन उजारा॥ ४ ॥

sākhāmṛiga kai baṛi manusāī sākhā teṁ sākhā para jāī nāghi siṁdhu hāṭakapura jārā nisichara gana badhi bipina ujārā

Translation

"A monkey's great manly feat is jumping from branch to branch. That I crossed the ocean, burned the golden city, killed hosts of demons and wrecked the grove,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"बंदर का बस यही बड़ा पुरुषार्थ है कि वह एक डाल से दूसरी डाल पर चला जाता है। मैंने जो समुद्र लाँघकर सोने का नगर जलाया और राक्षसों को मारकर वन उजाड़ा,

Commentary

Hanuman describes his deeds with gentle self-mockery: crossing the ocean is just a bigger version of what any monkey does between branches.

Verse 33.5

सो सब तव प्रताप रघुराई। नाथ न कछू मोरि प्रभुताई॥ ५ ॥

so saba tava pratāpa raghurāī nātha na kachhū mori prabhutāī

Translation

"all that was your glory, Raghurai; master, none of it was my own power."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"वह सब हे रघुनाथ जी! आपका ही प्रताप है। हे नाथ! इसमें मेरी कुछ भी प्रभुता नहीं।"

Verse 33.6

ता कहुँ प्रभु कछु अगम नहिं जा पर तुम्ह अनुकूल। तव प्रभावँ बड़वानलहि जारि सकइ खलु तूल॥ ३३ ॥

tā kahum̐ prabhu kachhu agama nahiṁ jā para tumha anukūla tava prabhāvam̐ baṛavānalahi jāri sakai khalu tūla

Translation

"Lord, nothing is out of reach for one whom you favour. By your power, a wisp of cotton can surely burn up the undersea fire."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे प्रभु! जिस पर आप प्रसन्न हों, उसके लिए कुछ भी कठिन नहीं है। आपके प्रभाव से रुई भी बड़वानल को निश्चय ही जला सकती है।"

Commentary

Badavanala is the mythical fire burning under the ocean, which consumes the sea's waters without ever going out. Normally fire burns cotton; by Rama's grace the cotton burns the fire. This matches the snake-and-Garuda image in 16.6.
