Vibhishana before Rama

Doha 45: Vibhishana before Rama

Vibhishana sees Rama and introduces himself honestly, hiding nothing.

Verse 45.1

sādara tehi āgeṁ kari bānara chale jahām̐ raghupati karunākara dūrihi te dekhe dvau bhrātā nayanānaṁda dāna ke dātā

Translation

Respectfully putting him in front, the monkeys went to where Raghupati, the mine of compassion, was. From a distance he saw the two brothers, who give the gift of joy to the eyes.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

bahuri rāma chhabidhāma bilokī raheu ṭhaṭuki ekaṭaka pala rokī bhuja pralaṁba kaṁjāruna lochana syāmala gāta pranata bhaya mochana

Translation

Then, seeing Rama, the home of beauty, he stopped short and gazed without blinking: his long arms, his rosy lotus eyes, his dark body, the one who frees from fear those who bow to him,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

siṁgha kaṁdha āyata ura sohā ānana amita madana mana mohā nayana nīra pulakita ati gātā mana dhari dhīra kahī mṛidu bātā

Translation

his lion shoulders, his broad and splendid chest, a face that would enchant the mind of countless Kamadevas. With tears in his eyes and his body thrilling, he steadied himself and spoke gently:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

nātha dasānana kara maiṁ bhrātā nisichara baṁsa janama suratrātā sahaja pāpapriya tāmasa dehā jathā ulūkahi tama para nehā

Translation

"Master, I am Ravana's brother. Protector of the gods, I was born in the demon race, with a dark, tamasic body that naturally loves sin, just as the owl loves darkness.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Vibhishana hides nothing. He introduces himself with the worst facts first: whose brother he is, and what kind of nature he was born with.

Verse 45.5

śhravana sujasu suni āyaum̐ prabhu bhaṁjana bhava bhīra trāhi trāhi ārati harana sarana sukhada raghubīra

Translation

"Lord, I have come having heard your good name, you who break the fear of worldly existence. Save me, save me, Raghubir, you who take away distress and give joy to those who seek refuge."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
