Meghanada and the Brahmastra

Doha 19: Meghanada and the Brahmastra

Indrajit cannot defeat him; Hanuman submits to the Brahma weapon out of respect.

Verse 19.1

suni suta badha laṁkesa risānā paṭhaesi meghanāda balavānā mārasi jani suta bām̐dhesu tāhī dekhia kapihi kahām̐ kara āhī

Translation

Hearing of his son's death, the lord of Lanka was furious and sent the mighty Meghanada: "Don't kill him, son; tie him up, so we can see where this monkey comes from."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

chalā iṁdrajita atulita jodhā baṁdhu nidhana suni upajā krodhā kapi dekhā dāruna bhaṭa āvā kaṭakaṭāi garjā aru dhāvā

Translation

Indrajit, the unequalled warrior, set out, furious at hearing of his brother's death. The monkey saw the fearsome warrior coming, gnashed his teeth, roared, and charged.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Meghanada earned the name Indrajit, "conqueror of Indra," by once defeating the king of the gods. He is the strongest warrior Hanuman faces in Lanka.

Verse 19.3

ati bisāla taru eka upārā biratha kīnha laṁkesa kumārā rahe mahābhaṭa tāke saṁgā gahi gahi kapi mardaī nija aṁgā

Translation

He uprooted a huge tree and knocked the prince of Lanka out of his chariot. The great warriors with him the monkey seized one by one and crushed against his body.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

tinhahi nipāti tāhi sana bājā bhire jugala mānahum̐ gajarājā muṭhikā māri chaṛhā taru jāī tāhi eka chhana muruchhā āī

Translation

Having struck them down, he fought Meghanada himself; the two clashed like great elephants. Punching him, Hanuman leapt up into a tree, and Meghanada fainted for a moment.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

uṭhi bahori kīnhisi bahu māyā jīti na jāi prabhaṁjana jāyā

Translation

He got up again and worked many kinds of sorcery, but the son of the wind could not be beaten.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

brahma astra tehi sām̐dhā kapi mana kīnha bichāra jauṁ na brahmasara mānaum̐ mahimā miṭai apāra

Translation

Then he aimed the Brahma weapon. The monkey thought, "If I do not honour Brahma's arrow, its immense glory will be lost."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Hanuman is not defeated; he chooses to submit. Allowing himself to be bound out of respect for Brahma's weapon also gets him exactly what he wants: an audience with Ravana.
