Vibhishana's Counsel

Doha 38: Vibhishana's Counsel

Vibhishana warns against coveting another man's wife and against lust, anger, pride and greed.

Verse 38.1

soi rāvana kahum̐ banī sahāī astuti karahiṁ sunāi sunāī avasara jāni bibhīṣhanu āvā bhrātā charana sīsu tehiṁ nāvā

Translation

That is exactly what happened to Ravana: they kept singing his praises for him to hear. Seeing his chance, Vibhishana came and bowed his head at his elder brother's feet.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

puni siru nāi baiṭha nija āsana bolā bachana pāi anusāsana jau kṛipāla pūm̐chhihu mohi bātā mati anurūpa kahaum̐ hita tātā

Translation

Bowing again, he sat in his own seat, and when given permission, he spoke: "Gracious one, since you ask my opinion, brother, I will tell you what is good, as far as I understand it.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

jo āpana chāhai kalyānā sujasu sumati subha gati sukha nānā so paranāri lilāra gosāīṁ tajau chauthi ke chaṁda ki nāīṁ

Translation

"Whoever wants his own welfare, good fame, good sense, a good end and joys of many kinds, master, must turn away from another man's wife as from the moon of the fourth day.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Popular belief holds that looking at the moon on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada (Ganesh Chaturthi) brings false accusation. Vibhishana uses the image: another man's wife should be something one does not even look at.

Verse 38.4

chaudaha bhuvana eka pati hoī bhūta droha tiṣhṭai nahiṁ soī guna sāgara nāgara nara joū alapa lobha bhala kahai na koū

Translation

"Even one who is sole lord of the fourteen worlds cannot last if he harms living beings. Even a man who is an ocean of virtues and clever too, no one speaks well of him if he has even a little greed.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

kāma krodha mada lobha saba nātha naraka ke paṁtha saba parihari raghubīrahi bhajahu bhajahiṁ jehi saṁta

Translation

"Master, lust, anger, pride and greed are all roads to hell. Give them all up and worship Raghubir, whom the saints worship."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
