The Return

Doha 28: The Return

Hanuman leaps back to cheering monkeys, who celebrate by raiding Sugriva's Madhuvan grove.

Verse 28.1

chalata mahādhuni garjesi bhārī garbha sravahiṁ suni nisichara nārī nāghi siṁdhu ehi pārahi āvā sabada kilakilā kapinha sunāvā

Translation

As he set off he roared with a tremendous sound, and hearing it the demon women miscarried. Crossing the ocean, he came to this shore and gave the monkeys his joyful whoop.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Kilakila is the high-pitched chattering cry of a happy monkey. The waiting army hears it before they see him and knows at once that the news is good.

Verse 28.2

haraṣhe saba biloki hanumānā nūtana janma kapinha taba jānā mukha prasanna tana teja birājā kīnhesi rāmachaṁdra kara kājā

Translation

Seeing Hanuman, they all rejoiced, and the monkeys felt they had been born anew. His face was bright and his body shone with radiance: he had done Ramachandra's work.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The monkeys feel reborn because, in the Kishkindha Kand, Sugriva had threatened them with death if they came back without news of Sita.

Verse 28.3

mile sakala ati bhae sukhārī talaphata mīna pāva jimi bārī chale haraṣhi raghunāyaka pāsā pūm̐chhata kahata navala itihāsā

Translation

They all met him and were overjoyed, like a thrashing fish that finds water. Joyfully they set off towards Raghunayak, asking and telling the fresh news as they went.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

taba madhubana bhītara saba āe aṁgada saṁmata madhu phala khāe rakhavāre jaba barajana lāge muṣhṭi prahāra hanata saba bhāge

Translation

Then they all went into the Madhuvan, and with Angada's consent they ate the honey and fruit. When the guards tried to stop them, they drove them all off with their fists.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The Madhuvan, "honey grove," was Sugriva's private royal garden. The monkeys' raid on it is the comic relief after the tension of Lanka.

Verse 28.5

jāi pukāre te saba bana ujāra jubarāja suni sugrīva haraṣha kapi kari āe prabhu kāja

Translation

The guards all went and complained, "The crown prince is wrecking the grove!" Hearing this, Sugriva was delighted: the monkeys had come back having done the Lord's work.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
