Longing for Rama's Feet

Doha 42: Longing for Rama's Feet

On the way, Vibhishana dreams of the feet that freed Ahalya and that Bharat worships.

Verse 42.1

asa kahi chalā bibhīṣhanu jabahīṁ āyū hīna bhae saba tabahīṁ sādhu avagyā turata bhavānī kara kalyāna akhila kai hānī

Translation

The moment Vibhishana left, saying this, all of them were doomed. Bhavani, an insult to a holy man at once destroys every kind of good.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

rāvana jabahiṁ bibhīṣhana tyāgā bhayau bibhava binu tabahiṁ abhāgā chaleu haraṣhi raghunāyaka pāhīṁ karata manoratha bahu mana māhīṁ

Translation

The moment Ravana cast out Vibhishana, the ill-fated king lost all his glory. Vibhishana went joyfully to Raghunayak, with many hopes in his heart:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

dekhihaum̐ jāi charana jalajātā aruna mṛidula sevaka sukhadātā je pada parasi tarī riṣhi nārī daṁḍaka kānana pāvanakārī

Translation

"I will go and see those lotus feet, rosy and tender, which bring joy to his servants; the feet whose touch saved the sage's wife, and which made the Dandaka forest holy;

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"मैं जाकर उन चरणकमलों को देखूँगा, जो लाल और कोमल हैं और सेवकों को सुख देने वाले हैं; जिनके स्पर्श से ऋषि-पत्नी अहल्या तर गईं, और जो दंडकवन को पवित्र करने वाले हैं;

Commentary

The next three verses are a litany of Rama's feet, with each line recalling an earlier episode: Ahalya freed from her curse (Bal Kand), the Dandaka forest purified during the exile (Aranya Kand).

Verse 42.4

je pada janakasutām̐ ura lāe kapaṭa kuraṁga saṁga dhara dhāe hara ura sara saroja pada jeī ahobhāgya maiṁ dekhihaum̐ teī

Translation

"the feet that Janaka's daughter holds to her heart, that ran after the false deer; the lotus feet that live in the lake of Shiva's heart: how fortunate I am, I shall see those very feet!

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

jinha pāyanha ke pādukanhi bharatu rahe mana lāi te pada āju bilokihaum̐ inha nayananhi aba jāi

Translation

"The feet whose sandals Bharat keeps his heart fixed on, those feet I shall now go and see with these very eyes today."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

In the Ayodhya Kand, Bharat placed Rama's sandals on the throne and ruled in their name. Vibhishana, still a stranger, already knows and cherishes the whole story, which marks him as a true devotee.
