Punishment for the Envoy

Doha 24: Punishment for the Envoy

Ravana orders his death; Vibhishana cites the law protecting envoys, and Ravana orders his tail burned instead.

Verse 24.1

जदपि कही कपि अति हित बानी। भगति बिबेक बिरति नय सानी॥ बोला बिहसि महा अभिमानी। मिला हमहि कपि गुर बड़ ग्यानी॥ १ ॥

jadapi kahī kapi ati hita bānī bhagati bibeka birati naya sānī bolā bihasi mahā abhimānī milā hamahi kapi gura baṛa gyānī

Translation

Though the monkey had spoken words of great benefit, full of devotion, discernment, detachment and good policy, the supremely arrogant Ravana laughed and said, "We've found ourselves a monkey guru, a great sage!

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

यद्यपि कपि ने भक्ति, विवेक, वैराग्य और नीति से भरी अत्यंत हितकारी बात कही, फिर भी वह महा अभिमानी हँसकर बोला, "हमें यह बंदर बड़ा ज्ञानी गुरु मिला है!

Verse 24.2

मृत्यु निकट आई खल तोही। लागेसि अधम सिखावन मोही॥ उलटा होइहि कह हनुमाना। मतिभ्रम तोर प्रगट मैं जाना॥ २ ॥

mṛityu nikaṭa āī khala tohī lāgesi adhama sikhāvana mohī ulaṭā hoihi kaha hanumānā matibhrama tora pragaṭa maiṁ jānā

Translation

"You villain, your death is near, since you, wretch, have started lecturing me." "It will be the other way round," said Hanuman; "I can see plainly that your mind is deluded."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

suni kapi bachana bahuta khisiānā begi na harahu mūṛha kara prānā sunata nisāchara mārana dhāe sachivanha sahita bibhīṣhanu āe

Translation

Hearing the monkey's words he grew very angry: "Quick, why don't you kill this fool?" Hearing this the demons rushed to kill him, but Vibhishana arrived with the ministers.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

nāi sīsa kari binaya bahūtā nīti birodha na māria dūtā āna daṁḍa kachhu karia gosām̐ī sabahīṁ kahā maṁtra bhala bhāī

Translation

Bowing his head and pleading earnestly, he said, "Killing an envoy is against the rules of statecraft. Master, give him some other punishment." Everyone said, "Brother, that is good counsel."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

सिर नवाकर और बहुत विनती करके उन्होंने कहा, "दूत को मारना नीति के विरुद्ध है। हे स्वामी! कोई और दंड दीजिए।" सबने कहा, "भाई! यह सलाह अच्छी है।"

Commentary

The rule that an envoy (duta) must not be killed was an old principle of Indian statecraft. Vibhishana saves Hanuman by appealing to it, not to mercy, since mercy would not move Ravana.

Verse 24.5

सुनत बिहसि बोला दसकंधर। अंग भंग करि पठइअ बंदर॥ ५ ॥

sunata bihasi bolā dasakaṁdhara aṁga bhaṁga kari paṭhaia baṁdara

Translation

Hearing this, the ten-headed one laughed and said, "Then maim the monkey and send him back."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

यह सुनकर दशकंधर हँसकर बोला, "अच्छा, तो बंदर का कोई अंग भंग करके उसे भेज दो।"

Verse 24.6

कपि कें ममता पूँछ पर सबहि कहउँ समुझाइ। तेल बोरि पट बाँधि पुनि पावक देहु लगाइ॥ २४ ॥

kapi keṁ mamatā pūm̐chha para sabahi kahaum̐ samujhāi tela bori paṭa bām̐dhi puni pāvaka dehu lagāi

Translation

"Let me explain to you all: a monkey loves his tail. Soak cloth in oil, wrap it round his tail, and set it on fire."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"मैं सबको समझाकर कहता हूँ, बंदर की ममता पूँछ पर होती है। तेल में कपड़ा डुबोकर पूँछ पर बाँधो और फिर आग लगा दो।"
