Shuka's Report

Doha 54: Shuka's Report

Shuka describes the vast army and names its great warriors.

Verse 54.1

nātha kṛipā kari pūm̐chhehu jaiseṁ mānahu kahā krodha taji taiseṁ milā jāi jaba anuja tumhārā jātahiṁ rāma tilaka tehi sārā

Translation

"Master, since you have kindly asked, put aside your anger and accept what I say. When your younger brother went and met him, Rama marked him with the royal tilak the moment he arrived.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

rāvana dūta hamahi suni kānā kapinha bām̐dhi dīnheṁ dukha nānā śhravana nāsikā kāṭaiṁ lāge rāma sapatha dīnheṁ hama tyāge

Translation

"Hearing that we were Ravana's spies, the monkeys tied us up and gave us all sorts of pain. They began to cut off our ears and noses; when we invoked Rama's name, they let us go.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

pūm̐chhihu nātha rāma kaṭakāī badana koṭi sata barani na jāī nānā barana bhālu kapi dhārī bikaṭānana bisāla bhayakārī

Translation

"Master, you ask about Rama's army: it cannot be described even with a billion mouths. Bears and monkeys of many colours, with terrible faces, huge and frightening.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

jehiṁ pura daheu hateu suta torā sakala kapinha maham̐ tehi balu thorā amita nāma bhaṭa kaṭhina karālā amita nāga bala bipula bisālā

Translation

"The one who burned the city and killed your son has the least strength of all the monkeys. There are countless warriors with names, tough and fearsome, with the strength of countless elephants, vast and huge:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Shuka's claim that Hanuman is the weakest of them is exaggeration, whether to frighten Ravana or perhaps what the monkeys told him. Either way it deepens the dread in Lanka.

Verse 54.5

dvibida mayaṁda nīla nala aṁgada gada bikaṭāsi dadhimukha kehari nisaṭha saṭha jāmavaṁta balarāsi

Translation

"Dvivida, Mainda, Nila, Nala, Angada, Gada, Vikatasya, Dadhimukha, Kesari, Nishatha, Shatha, and Jambavan, a heap of strength."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

A roll-call of the monkey and bear generals. Kesari is named among them; in tradition he is Hanuman's father.
