Searching the Palaces

Doha 5: Searching the Palaces

Hanuman searches Ravana's palace in vain, then finds a house marked with Rama's weapons and tulsi plants.

Verse 5.1

prabisi nagara kīje saba kājā hṛidayam̐ rākhi kosalapura rājā garala sudhā ripu karahiṁ mitāī gopada siṁdhu anala sitalāī

Translation

"Enter the city and do all your work, keeping the King of Kosala in your heart. For him, poison becomes nectar and enemies become friends; the ocean shrinks to a cow's hoofprint and fire turns cool,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

"Prabisi nagara kije saba kaja, hridayan rakhi kosalapura raja" is recited by many as a line to say before starting any undertaking. Lankini, now a devotee, sends Hanuman in with a blessing.

Verse 5.2

garuṛa sumeru renu sama tāhī rāma kṛipā kari chitavā jāhī ati laghu rūpa dhareu hanumānā paiṭhā nagara sumiri bhagavānā

Translation

"and even Mount Sumeru becomes like a speck of dust to one on whom Rama looks with grace." Hanuman took a very small form and entered the city, remembering the Lord.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sayana kiem̐ dekhā kapi tehī maṁdira mahum̐ na dīkhi baidehī bhavana eka puni dīkha suhāvā hari maṁdira taham̐ bhinna banāvā

Translation

The monkey saw Ravana asleep, but Vaidehi was not to be seen in the palace. Then he saw a lovely house, with a temple to Hari built separately in it.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

rāmāyudha aṁkita gṛiha sobhā barani na jāi nava tulasikā bṛiṁda taham̐ dekhi haraṣhi kapirāi

Translation

The house was marked with Rama's weapons, and its beauty was indescribable. Seeing fresh clusters of tulsi there, the king of monkeys was delighted.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Symbols of Rama's bow and arrows painted on the walls and tulsi plants in the courtyard are the signs of a Vaishnava home, still found in devout households today. In the middle of Lanka they tell Hanuman that a devotee lives here.
