Sita's Blessing

Doha 17: Sita's Blessing

Sita blesses him to be ageless and immortal; he asks leave to eat the fruit of the grove.

Verse 17.1

मन संतोष सुनत कपि बानी। भगति प्रताप तेज बल सानी॥ आसिष दीन्हि राम प्रिय जाना। होहु तात बल सील निधाना॥ १ ॥

mana saṁtoṣha sunata kapi bānī bhagati pratāpa teja bala sānī āsiṣha dīnhi rāma priya jānā hohu tāta bala sīla nidhānā

Translation

Hearing the monkey's words, full of devotion, splendour and strength, Sita was content. Knowing him to be dear to Rama, she blessed him: "Son, may you be a treasury of strength and good character.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

कपि की भक्ति, प्रताप, तेज और बल से भरी बात सुनकर सीता जी के मन को संतोष हुआ। उन्हें राम का प्रिय जानकर आशीर्वाद दिया, "हे तात! तुम बल और शील के भंडार बनो।

Verse 17.2

अजर अमर गुननिधि सुत होहू। करहुँ बहुत रघुनायक छोहू॥ करहुँ कृपा प्रभु अस सुनि काना। निर्भर प्रेम मगन हनुमाना॥ २ ॥

ajara amara gunanidhi suta hohū karahum̐ bahuta raghunāyaka chhohū karahum̐ kṛipā prabhu asa suni kānā nirbhara prema magana hanumānā

Translation

"Son, may you be free of age and death, a treasury of virtues; may Raghunayak shower you with affection." "May the Lord be gracious": hearing these words, Hanuman was overwhelmed with love.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे पुत्र! तुम अजर, अमर और गुणों के खज़ाने बनो, रघुनायक तुम पर बहुत स्नेह करें।" "प्रभु कृपा करें", यह कानों से सुनते ही हनुमान जी पूर्ण प्रेम में मग्न हो गए।

Commentary

Sita's blessing of agelessness and immortality (ajara amara) is the traditional source of the belief that Hanuman is a chiranjivi, one of the immortals who still live on earth. Yet the part of the blessing that moves him most is "may the Lord be gracious."

Verse 17.3

बार बार नाएसि पद सीसा। बोला बचन जोरि कर कीसा॥ अब कृतकृत्य भयउँ मैं माता। आसिष तव अमोघ बिख्याता॥ ३ ॥

bāra bāra nāesi pada sīsā bolā bachana jori kara kīsā aba kṛitakṛitya bhayaum̐ maiṁ mātā āsiṣha tava amogha bikhyātā

Translation

Again and again he bowed his head at her feet, then folded his hands and said, "Mother, now my life is fulfilled; your blessing is famous for never failing.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

उन्होंने बार-बार चरणों में सिर नवाया और हाथ जोड़कर बोले, "हे माता! अब मैं कृतार्थ हो गया। आपका आशीर्वाद अमोघ है, यह सब जानते हैं।

Verse 17.4

सुनहु मातु मोहि अतिसय भूखा। लागि देखि सुंदर फल रूखा॥ सुनु सुत करहिं बिपिन रखवारी। परम सुभट रजनीचर भारी॥ ४ ॥

sunahu mātu mohi atisaya bhūkhā lāgi dekhi suṁdara phala rūkhā sunu suta karahiṁ bipina rakhavārī parama subhaṭa rajanīchara bhārī

Translation

"Listen, mother, I am very hungry, seeing the lovely fruit on these trees." "Listen, son, the grove is guarded by huge demons, mighty warriors."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"माता, सुनिए! इन पेड़ों पर सुंदर फल देखकर मुझे बहुत भूख लग आई है।" "हे पुत्र, सुनो! इस वन की रखवाली बड़े-बड़े बलवान राक्षस योद्धा करते हैं।"

Commentary

Hunger is Hanuman's polite pretext. His real aim, which becomes clear shortly, is to test Ravana's strength and get himself brought before the king.

Verse 17.5

तिन्ह कर भय माता मोहि नाहीं। जौं तुम्ह सुख मानहु मन माहीं॥ ५ ॥

tinha kara bhaya mātā mohi nāhīṁ jauṁ tumha sukha mānahu mana māhīṁ

Translation

"Mother, I have no fear of them, if only you are pleased in your heart."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"माता! यदि आप मन में प्रसन्न हों, तो मुझे उनका कोई डर नहीं।"

Verse 17.6

देखि बुद्धि बल निपुन कपि कहेउ जानकीं जाहु। रघुपति चरन हृदयँ धरि तात मधुर फल खाहु॥ १७ ॥

dekhi buddhi bala nipuna kapi kaheu jānakīṁ jāhu raghupati charana hṛidayam̐ dhari tāta madhura phala khāhu

Translation

Seeing the monkey so skilled in intelligence and strength, Janaki said, "Go, son. Holding Raghupati's feet in your heart, eat the sweet fruit."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

कपि को बुद्धि और बल में निपुण देखकर जानकी जी ने कहा, "जाओ, हे तात! श्री रघुनाथ जी के चरणों को हृदय में धारण करके मीठे फल खाओ।"
