Sita's Words

Doha 31: Sita's Words

Hanuman gives Rama the crest-jewel and delivers Sita's anguished message.

Verse 31.1

चलत मोहि चूड़ामनि दीन्हीं। रघुपति हृदयँ लाइ सोइ लीन्ही॥ नाथ जुगल लोचन भरि बारी। बचन कहे कछु जनककुमारी॥ १ ॥

chalata mohi chūṛāmani dīnhīṁ raghupati hṛidayam̐ lāi soi līnhī nātha jugala lochana bhari bārī bachana kahe kachhu janakakumārī

Translation

"As I left, she gave me this crest-jewel." Raghupati took it and pressed it to his heart. "Master, with both eyes full of tears, Janaka's daughter spoke a few words:

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

anuja sameta gahehu prabhu charanā dīna baṁdhu pranatārati haranā mana krama bachana charana anurāgī kehiṁ aparādha nātha hauṁ tyāgī

Translation

"'Clasp the Lord's feet, together with his brother, and say: you are the friend of the lowly, who removes the pain of those who bow to you. I love your feet in thought, deed and word; for what fault, master, have you abandoned me?

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

avaguna eka mora maiṁ mānā bichhurata prāna na kīnha payānā nātha so nayananhi ko aparādhā nisarata prāna karahiṁ haṭhi bādhā

Translation

"'I admit one fault of mine: when I was parted from you, my life did not depart. But master, that is the fault of my eyes: they stubbornly block my life from leaving.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"'मैं अपना एक अवगुण मानती हूँ कि आपसे बिछुड़ते ही प्राण नहीं निकल गए। पर हे नाथ! यह आँखों का अपराध है, जो निकलते प्राणों को हठपूर्वक रोक देती हैं।

Commentary

Sita accuses herself of the "fault" of still being alive, and then blames her eyes: they want to see Rama again, so they will not let her life go. This extends Hanuman's image in doha 30 of her eyes as a lock.

Verse 31.4

बिरह अगिनि तनु तूल समीरा। स्वास जरइ छन माहिं सरीरा॥ नयन स्रवहिं जलु निज हित लागी। जरैं न पाव देह बिरहागी॥ ४ ॥

biraha agini tanu tūla samīrā svāsa jarai chhana māhiṁ sarīrā nayana sravahiṁ jalu nija hita lāgī jaraiṁ na pāva deha birahāgī

Translation

"'Separation is fire, my body is cotton, and my breath is the wind; the body could burn up in a moment. But my eyes shed tears for their own sake, so the fire of separation cannot burn my body.'

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"'विरह अग्नि है, शरीर रुई है और श्वास पवन है, इस तरह शरीर क्षण भर में जल सकता है। पर आँखें अपने स्वार्थ के लिए आँसू बहाती हैं, इसलिए विरह की आग शरीर को जला नहीं पाती।'

Commentary

An intricate conceit: fire, cotton and wind should mean instant burning, but the tears keep putting out the fire, because the eyes still hope to see Rama.

Verse 31.5

सीता कै अति बिपति बिसाला। बिनहिं कहें भलि दीनदयाला॥ ५ ॥

sītā kai ati bipati bisālā binahiṁ kaheṁ bhali dīnadayālā

Translation

"Sita's suffering is immense; friend of the lowly, it is better left untold.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"सीता जी की विपत्ति बहुत बड़ी है। हे दीनदयालु! उसे बिना कहे रहना ही अच्छा है।

Verse 31.6

निमिष निमिष करुनानिधि जाहिं कलप सम बीति। बेगि चलिअ प्रभु आनिअ भुज बल खल दल जीति॥ ३१ ॥

nimiṣha nimiṣha karunānidhi jāhiṁ kalapa sama bīti begi chalia prabhu ānia bhuja bala khala dala jīti

Translation

"Treasury of compassion, every moment passes for her like an age. Come quickly, Lord, defeat the army of the wicked by the strength of your arms, and bring her back."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे करुणानिधान! उनका एक-एक पल कल्प के समान बीत रहा है। हे प्रभु! जल्दी चलिए और भुजाओं के बल से दुष्टों की सेना जीतकर उन्हें ले आइए।"
