The Fire-Arrow

Doha 58: The Fire-Arrow

Rama strings his bow; as the sea begins to burn, the ocean comes in a brahmin's form with gems.

Verse 58.1

lachhimana bāna sarāsana ānū soṣhauṁ bāridhi bisikha kṛisānu saṭha sana binaya kuṭila sana prīti sahaja kṛipana sana suṁdara nīti

Translation

"Lakshman, bring my bow and arrows. I will dry up the ocean with the fire of my arrows. Pleading with a fool, friendship with a crooked man, good policy with a born miser,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

mamatā rata sana gyāna kahānī ati lobhī sana birati bakhānī krodhihi sama kāmihi harikathā ūsara bīja baem̐ phala jathā

Translation

"talk of wisdom to one lost in possessiveness, praise of renunciation to the very greedy, calm to the angry and the story of Hari to the lustful: all are like sowing seed in barren ground."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

asa kahi raghupati chāpa chaṛhāvā yaha mata lachhimana ke mana bhāvā saṁdhāneu prabhu bisikha karālā uṭhī udadhi ura aṁtara jvālā

Translation

Saying this, Raghupati strung his bow; this plan pleased Lakshman. The Lord fitted a terrible arrow, and a blaze of fire rose within the ocean's heart.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

makara uraga jhaṣha gana akulāne jarata jaṁtu jalanidhi jaba jāne kanaka thāra bhari mani gana nānā bipra rūpa āyau taji mānā

Translation

The crocodiles, snakes and shoals of fish were in distress. When the ocean saw its creatures burning, it gave up its pride and came in the form of a brahmin, bearing a golden platter full of many kinds of gems.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

kāṭehiṁ pai kadarī pharai koṭi jatana kou sīṁcha binaya na māna khagesa sunu ḍāṭehiṁ pai nava nīcha

Translation

"Listen, king of birds: a banana plant bears fruit only when it is cut, whatever effort one makes to water it. The base will not heed a humble plea; they bow only when they are scolded."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Here the narrator's voice changes: "khagesa," king of birds, is Garuda, to whom the crow-sage Kakabhushundi tells the Ramayana in the Manas's outer frame. The folk belief is that a banana plant fruits properly once its stem is cut back.
