The Crest-Jewel

Doha 27: The Crest-Jewel

Sita gives him her crest-jewel and a private message for Rama: come within a month.

Verse 27.1

mātu mohi dīje kachhu chīnhā jaiseṁ raghunāyaka mohi dīnhā chūṛāmani utāri taba dayaū haraṣha sameta pavanasuta layaū

Translation

"Mother, give me some token, just as Raghunayak gave me one." Then she took off her crest-jewel and gave it to him, and the son of the wind accepted it joyfully.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The chudamani, a jewel worn in the hair, answers the ring Rama sent. Rama will recognise it at once, which is exactly why Hanuman asks for it.

Verse 27.2

kahehu tāta asa mora pranāmā saba prakāra prabhu pūranakāmā dīna dayāla biridu saṁbhārī harahu nātha mama saṁkaṭa bhārī

Translation

"Dear one, give him my greetings like this: 'Lord, you lack nothing in any way. But honour your title as the friend of the lowly, and take away my heavy trouble.'

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Sita's message is carefully worded. She does not claim that Rama needs her; instead she appeals to his own vow (biridu) to rescue the helpless.

Verse 27.3

tāta sakrasuta kathā sunāehu bāna pratāpa prabhuhi samujhāehu māsa divasa mahum̐ nāthu na āvā tau puni mohi jiata nahiṁ pāvā

Translation

"Dear one, tell him the story of Indra's son, and remind the Lord of the power of his arrow. If my Lord does not come within a month, he will not find me alive.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The story of Indra's son Jayanta, told in the Aranya Kand, is private: disguised as a crow, he pecked Sita's foot, and Rama chased him through the three worlds with a single blade of grass charged as an arrow. Only Rama and Sita know it, so it proves the message is really hers. The one-month limit echoes Ravana's deadline in 10.5.

Verse 27.4

kahu kapi kehi bidhi rākhauṁ prānā tumhahū tāta kahata aba jānā tohi dekhi sītali bhai chhātī puni mo kahum̐ soi dinu so rātī

Translation

"Tell me, monkey, how shall I keep myself alive? Now you too, dear one, are talking of leaving. Seeing you cooled my heart; now for me there will again be those same days and nights."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

janakasutahi samujhāi kari bahu bidhi dhīraju dīnha charana kamala siru nāi kapi gavanu rāma pahiṁ kīnha

Translation

He consoled Janaka's daughter and reassured her in many ways. Then, bowing his head at her lotus feet, the monkey set off to go to Rama.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
