Lakshman's Letter

Doha 56: Lakshman's Letter

Ravana scoffs, and the letter is read: become a bee at Rama's feet, or a moth in his fire.

Verse 56.1

राम तेज बल बुधि बिपुलाई। सेष सहस सत सकहिं न गाई॥ सक सर एक सोषि सत सागर। तव भ्रातहि पूँछेउ नय नागर॥ १ ॥

rāma teja bala budhi bipulāī seṣha sahasa sata sakahiṁ na gāī saka sara eka soṣhi sata sāgara tava bhrātahi pūm̐chheu naya nāgara

Translation

"A hundred thousand Sheshas could not sing the abundance of Rama's splendour, strength and wisdom. He could dry up a hundred oceans with a single arrow, yet, being skilled in good policy, he asked your brother for advice,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"राम के तेज, बल और बुद्धि की अधिकता को लाखों शेष भी नहीं गा सकते। वे एक ही बाण से सौ समुद्रों को सुखा सकते हैं, पर नीति में निपुण होने से उन्होंने आपके भाई से सलाह पूछी,

Verse 56.2

तासु बचन सुनि सागर पाहीं। मागत पंथ कृपा मन माहीं॥ सुनत बचन बिहसा दससीसा। जौं असि मति सहाय कृत कीसा॥ २ ॥

tāsu bachana suni sāgara pāhīṁ māgata paṁtha kṛipā mana māhīṁ sunata bachana bihasā dasasīsā jauṁ asi mati sahāya kṛita kīsā

Translation

"and on his advice he is asking the ocean for a path, with mercy in his heart." Hearing this, the ten-headed one laughed: "With a mind like that, no wonder he has made monkeys his allies!

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"और उसकी बात सुनकर वे मन में कृपा रखकर समुद्र से रास्ता माँग रहे हैं।" यह सुनकर रावण हँसा, "ऐसी बुद्धि है, तभी तो बंदरों को सहायक बनाया है!

Verse 56.3

सहज भीरु कर बचन दृढ़ाई। सागर सन ठानी मचलाई॥ मूढ़ मृषा का करसि बड़ाई। रिपु बल बुद्धि थाह मैं पाई॥ ३ ॥

sahaja bhīru kara bachana dṛiṛhāī sāgara sana ṭhānī machalāī mūṛha mṛiṣhā kā karasi baṛāī ripu bala buddhi thāha maiṁ pāī

Translation

"Taking the advice of a born coward as gospel, he has started pleading with the ocean like a sulking child. Fool, why this false praise? I have taken the measure of the enemy's strength and wisdom.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sachiva sabhīta bibhīṣhana jākeṁ bijaya bibhūti kahām̐ jaga tākeṁ suni khala bachana dūta risa bāṛhī samaya bichāri patrikā kāṛhī

Translation

"One whose adviser is the timid Vibhishana, where in the world is victory or glory for him?" Hearing the villain's words, the spy grew angry, and judging the moment right, he took out the letter.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"जिसका मंत्री डरपोक विभीषण हो, उसे जगत में विजय और वैभव कहाँ?" दुष्ट के वचन सुनकर दूत का क्रोध बढ़ा, और समय विचारकर उसने पत्र निकाला।

Verse 56.5

रामानुज दीन्हीं यह पाती। नाथ बचाइ जुड़ावहु छाती॥ बिहसि बाम कर लीन्हीं रावन। सचिव बोलि सठ लाग बचावन॥ ५ ॥

rāmānuja dīnhīṁ yaha pātī nātha bachāi juṛāvahu chhātī bihasi bāma kara līnhīṁ rāvana sachiva boli saṭha lāga bachāvana

Translation

"Rama's younger brother gave this letter. Master, have it read to you and cool your heart." Ravana laughed, took it in his left hand, called a minister, and the fool had it read out.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"राम के छोटे भाई ने यह पत्र दिया है। हे नाथ! इसे पढ़वाकर छाती ठंडी कीजिए।" रावण ने हँसकर उसे बाएँ हाथ से लिया और मंत्री को बुलवाकर वह मूर्ख उसे पढ़वाने लगा।

Commentary

Taking a letter with the left hand was a deliberate insult in Indian etiquette.

Verse 56.6

बातन्ह मनहि रिझाइ सठ जनि घालसि कुल खीस। राम बिरोध न उबरसि सरन बिष्नु अज ईस॥ ५६ (क) ॥

bātanha manahi rijhāi saṭha jani ghālasi kula khīsa rāma birodha na ubarasi sarana biṣhnu aja īsa

Translation

"Fool, do not please your mind with talk and bring your family to ruin. Having set yourself against Rama you will not escape, even in the refuge of Vishnu, Brahma or Shiva.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"अरे मूर्ख! केवल बातों से मन को बहलाकर अपने कुल का नाश मत कर। राम से विरोध करके तू विष्णु, ब्रह्मा और महेश की शरण में जाकर भी नहीं बचेगा।

Verse 56.7

की तजि मान अनुज इव प्रभु पद पंकज भृंग। होहि कि राम सरानल खल कुल सहित पतंग॥ ५६ (ख) ॥

kī taji māna anuja iva prabhu pada paṁkaja bhṛiṁga hohi ki rāma sarānala khala kula sahita pataṁga

Translation

"Either give up your pride and, like your younger brother, become a bee at the Lord's lotus feet, or else, villain, be a moth in the fire of Rama's arrows, along with your whole family."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"या तो अभिमान छोड़कर अपने छोटे भाई की तरह प्रभु के चरणकमलों का भौंरा बन जा, या हे दुष्ट! राम के बाण रूपी अग्नि में परिवार सहित पतंगा बन जा।"

Commentary

Lakshman's letter offers Ravana a stark choice, in two images: a bee drawn to the lotus, or a moth drawn to the flame. Both are drawn to Rama; only the outcome differs.
