Vibhishana's Hymn

Doha 47: Vibhishana's Hymn

Vibhishana describes the demons of the heart that last only until Rama enters it.

Verse 47.1

taba lagi hṛidayam̐ basata khala nānā lobha moha machchhara mada mānā jaba lagi ura na basata raghunāthā dhareṁ chāpa sāyaka kaṭi bhāthā

Translation

"Until Raghunath, with bow in hand and quiver at his waist, dwells in the heart, many villains live there: greed, delusion, envy, pride and vanity.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Vibhishana applies his own story to the inner life. The heart is like Lanka, full of demons (greed, delusion and the rest) until the armed Rama enters it.

Verse 47.2

mamatā taruna tamī am̐dhiārī rāga dveṣha ulūka sukhakārī taba lagi basati jīva mana māhīṁ jaba lagi prabhu pratāpa rabi nāhīṁ

Translation

"Possessiveness is a pitch-dark night, pleasant only to the owls of attachment and hatred. It stays in the soul's mind only until the sun of the Lord's glory rises.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The owl returns from 45.4, where Vibhishana compared his demon nature to an owl loving the dark. Here the darkness is possessiveness, and the owls are raga and dvesha, attachment and aversion.

Verse 47.3

aba maiṁ kusala miṭe bhaya bhāre dekhi rāma pada kamala tumhāre tumha kṛipāla jā para anukūlā tāhi na byāpa tribidha bhava sūlā

Translation

"Now I am well and my great fears are gone, having seen your lotus feet, Rama. Compassionate one, the threefold pain of worldly existence does not touch the one you favour.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

maiṁ nisichara ati adhama subhāū subha ācharanu kīnha nahiṁ kāū jāsu rūpa muni dhyāna na āvā tehiṁ prabhu haraṣhi hṛidayam̐ mohi lāvā

Translation

"I am a demon, very low by nature, and have never done a good deed. Yet the Lord whose form does not come even into the meditation of sages has joyfully pressed me to his heart.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

ahobhāgya mama amita ati rāma kṛipā sukha puṁja dekheum̐ nayana biraṁchi siva sebya jugala pada kaṁja

Translation

"Rama, heap of grace and joy, my good fortune is boundless: with my own eyes I have seen the pair of lotus feet served by Brahma and Shiva."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
