Wealth without Rama

Doha 23: Wealth without Rama

He warns that power turned away from Rama is like a river without a spring, and that no god can protect Rama's enemy.

Verse 23.1

rāma charana paṁkaja ura dharahū laṁkā achala rāju tumha karahū riṣhi pulasti jasu bimala mayaṁkā tehi sasi mahum̐ jani hohu kalaṁkā

Translation

"Hold Rama's lotus feet in your heart, and rule Lanka securely. The fame of the sage Pulastya is like a spotless moon; do not be the stain on that moon.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Ravana was the grandson of the great sage Pulastya, one of Brahma's mind-born sons. Hanuman appeals to his noble ancestry rather than threatening him.

Verse 23.2

rāma nāma binu girā na sohā dekhu bichāri tyāgi mada mohā basana hīna nahiṁ soha surārī saba bhūṣhana bhūṣhita bara nārī

Translation

"Speech without Rama's name has no beauty; put aside pride and delusion and think about it. O enemy of the gods, a fine woman adorned with every ornament does not look beautiful without clothes.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

A pointed comparison: all Ravana's wealth and power, without devotion, are like jewels on an unclothed body, splendid but shameful.

Verse 23.3

rāma bimukha saṁpati prabhutāī jāi rahī pāī binu pāī sajala mūla jinha saritanha nāhīṁ baraṣhi gaem̐ puni tabahiṁ sukhāhīṁ

Translation

"Wealth and power turned away from Rama go as if they had never been gained, just as rivers with no springs at their source dry up as soon as the rains have passed.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sunu dasakaṁṭha kahaum̐ pana ropī bimukha rāma trātā nahiṁ kopī saṁkara sahasa biṣhnu aja tohī sakahiṁ na rākhi rāma kara drohī

Translation

"Listen, ten-necked one, I tell you on oath: no one can protect a person who has turned against Rama. Even a thousand Shankaras, Vishnus and Brahmas cannot save you if you are Rama's enemy."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

mohamūla bahu sūla prada tyāgahu tama abhimāna bhajahu rāma raghunāyaka kṛipā siṁdhu bhagavāna

Translation

"Give up the dark pride that is rooted in delusion and brings much pain. Worship Rama, lord of the Raghus, the ocean of mercy, the Lord."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)
