Sundarkand — Doha 60

Nala and Nila; Conclusion

Doha 60: Nala and Nila; Conclusion

The ocean suggests a bridge built by Nala and Nila. Tulsidas closes with the fruit of hearing the kand.

Verse 60.1

नाथ नील नल कपि द्वौ भाई। लरिकाईं रिषि आसिष पाई॥ तिन्ह कें परस किएँ गिरि भारे। तरिहहिं जलधि प्रताप तुम्हारे॥ १ ॥

nātha nīla nala kapi dvau bhāī larikāīṁ riṣhi āsiṣha pāī tinha keṁ parasa kiem̐ giri bhāre tarihahiṁ jaladhi pratāpa tumhāre

Translation

"Master, the monkeys Nila and Nala are two brothers who received a sage's blessing in childhood. Mountains, however heavy, that they touch will float on the sea by your power.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे नाथ! नील और नल दो वानर भाई हैं, जिन्हें लड़कपन में ऋषि से आशीर्वाद मिला था। उनके छू देने से भारी-भारी पर्वत भी आपके प्रताप से समुद्र पर तैर जाएँगे।

Commentary

The story goes that the boys Nila and Nala used to throw sages' belongings into the water, so a sage blessed (or cursed) them that anything they threw would float. The mischief becomes the means of building the bridge (setu).

Verse 60.2

मैं पुनि उर धरि प्रभु प्रभुताई। करिहउँ बल अनुमान सहाई॥ एहि बिधि नाथ पयोधि बँधाइअ। जेहिं यह सुजसु लोक तिहुँ गाइअ॥ २ ॥

maiṁ puni ura dhari prabhu prabhutāī karihaum̐ bala anumāna sahāī ehi bidhi nātha payodhi bam̐dhāia jehiṁ yaha sujasu loka tihum̐ gāia

Translation

"And I, holding the Lord's greatness in my heart, will help as far as my strength allows. Master, bridge the ocean in this way, so that this fine fame of yours is sung in the three worlds.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"मैं भी प्रभु की प्रभुता को हृदय में धारण करके अपने बल के अनुसार सहायता करूँगा। हे नाथ! इस प्रकार समुद्र पर पुल बँधवाइए, जिससे तीनों लोकों में आपका यह सुंदर यश गाया जाए।

Commentary

The ocean suggests the bridge rather than drying up, so that it survives and Rama's fame grows. Everyone gains, and the kand ends on reconciliation rather than destruction.

Verse 60.3

एहि सर मम उत्तर तट बासी। हतहु नाथ खल नर अघ रासी॥ सुनि कृपाल सागर मन पीरा। तुरतहिं हरी राम रनधीरा॥ ३ ॥

ehi sara mama uttara taṭa bāsī hatahu nātha khala nara agha rāsī suni kṛipāla sāgara mana pīrā turatahiṁ harī rāma ranadhīrā

Translation

"Master, with this arrow kill the wicked men who live on my northern shore, heaps of sin." Hearing of the pain in the ocean's heart, the compassionate Rama, steady in battle, took it away at once.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे नाथ! इस बाण से मेरे उत्तरी तट पर रहने वाले पाप के ढेर दुष्ट मनुष्यों को मार दीजिए।" कृपालु और रणधीर राम ने समुद्र के मन की पीड़ा सुनकर उसे तुरंत हर लिया।

Commentary

The arrow already fitted to the bow cannot be withdrawn, so the ocean suggests a target for it. The Valmiki Ramayana places this land at Drumakulya; tradition connects the spot where the arrow fell with the desert of Marwar.

Verse 60.4

देखि राम बल पौरुष भारी। हरषि पयोनिधि भयउ सुखारी॥ सकल चरित कहि प्रभुहि सुनावा। चरन बंदि पाथोधि सिधावा॥ ४ ॥

dekhi rāma bala pauruṣha bhārī haraṣhi payonidhi bhayau sukhārī sakala charita kahi prabhuhi sunāvā charana baṁdi pāthodhi sidhāvā

Translation

Seeing Rama's mighty strength and valour, the ocean rejoiced and was content. He told the Lord the whole story of those men, then bowed at his feet and went away.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

nija bhavana gavaneu siṁdhu śhrīraghupatihi yaha mata bhāyaū yaha charita kali mala hara jathāmati dāsa tulasī gāyaū sukha bhavana saṁsaya samana davana biṣhāda raghupati guna ganā taji sakala āsa bharosa gāvahi sunahi saṁtata saṭha manā

Translation

The ocean went back to his home, and Raghupati liked his counsel. This story, which removes the stain of the Kali age, Tulsidas has sung as well as he could. The virtues of Raghupati are a home of joy; they end doubt and destroy grief. O foolish mind, give up every other hope and reliance, and sing and hear them always.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

The closing chhand carries Tulsidas's signature ("dasa tulasi") and turns from the story to the reader: the poet addresses his own mind, and through it everyone who has read the kand.

Verse 60.6

सकल सुमंगल दायक रघुनायक गुन गान। सादर सुनहिं ते तरहिं भव सिंधु बिना जलजान॥ ६० ॥

sakala sumaṁgala dāyaka raghunāyaka guna gāna sādara sunahiṁ te tarahiṁ bhava siṁdhu binā jalajāna

Translation

Singing the virtues of Raghunayak grants every blessing. Those who hear them with reverence will cross the ocean of worldly existence without any boat.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

श्री रघुनाथ जी का गुणगान सब सुंदर मंगलों को देने वाला है। जो इसे आदर सहित सुनेंगे, वे बिना किसी जहाज़ के भवसागर को पार कर जाएँगे।

Commentary

The kand ends with a play on its last events: the army needs a bridge to cross the real ocean, but the listener crosses the ocean of samsara with no vessel at all, simply by hearing Rama's story. Traditionally the Sundarkand path concludes here, often followed by the Hanuman aarti.
