Hanuman Reveals Himself

Doha 13: Hanuman Reveals Himself

Recognising the ring, Sita hears Rama's story from an unseen voice; Hanuman appears and wins her trust.

Verse 13.1

तब देखी मुद्रिका मनोहर। राम नाम अंकित अति सुंदर॥ चकित चितव मुदरी पहिचानी। हरष बिषाद हृदयँ अकुलानी॥ १ ॥

taba dekhī mudrikā manohara rāma nāma aṁkita ati suṁdara chakita chitava mudarī pahichānī haraṣha biṣhāda hṛidayam̐ akulānī

Translation

Then she looked at the ring: charming, very beautiful, engraved with Rama's name. She stared at it in amazement and recognised it, and her heart was torn between joy and grief.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

तब उन्होंने अँगूठी देखी, जो मनोहर और अत्यंत सुंदर थी और जिस पर राम नाम अंकित था। वे चकित होकर देखने लगीं और अँगूठी पहचान ली। हृदय हर्ष और विषाद से व्याकुल हो उठा।

Verse 13.2

जीति को सकइ अजय रघुराई। माया तें असि रचि नहिं जाई॥ सीता मन बिचार कर नाना। मधुर बचन बोलेउ हनुमाना॥ २ ॥

jīti ko sakai ajaya raghurāī māyā teṁ asi rachi nahiṁ jāī sītā mana bichāra kara nānā madhura bachana boleu hanumānā

Translation

"Who could defeat the invincible Raghurai? And such a thing cannot be made by magic." As Sita turned many thoughts over in her mind, Hanuman spoke sweet words.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"अजेय रघुनाथ जी को कौन जीत सकता है? और माया से ऐसी अँगूठी बनाई नहीं जा सकती।" सीता जी मन में तरह-तरह के विचार करने लगीं, तब हनुमान जी मधुर वचन बोले।

Commentary

Sita reasons carefully: the ring cannot have been taken from a defeated Rama, and it is too real to be a demon's illusion. Her caution is well founded, since Ravana first came to her in disguise.

Verse 13.3

रामचंद्र गुन बरनैं लागा। सुनतहिं सीता कर दुख भागा॥ लागीं सुनैं श्रवन मन लाई। आदिहु तें सब कथा सुनाई॥ ३ ॥

rāmachaṁdra guna baranaiṁ lāgā sunatahiṁ sītā kara dukha bhāgā lāgīṁ sunaiṁ śhravana mana lāī ādihu teṁ saba kathā sunāī

Translation

He began to describe Ramachandra's virtues, and as she listened, Sita's grief fled. She listened with ears and mind intent as he told the whole story from the beginning.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

वे श्री रामचंद्र जी के गुणों का वर्णन करने लगे, जिसे सुनते ही सीता जी का दुख भाग गया। वे कान और मन लगाकर सुनने लगीं, और हनुमान जी ने आरंभ से सारी कथा सुनाई।

Commentary

Hanuman does not introduce himself at first. He wins Sita's trust by speaking of Rama, which lets her decide for herself that the unseen voice is a friend.

Verse 13.4

श्रवनामृत जेहिं कथा सुहाई। कही सो प्रगट होति किन भाई॥ तब हनुमंत निकट चलि गयऊ। फिरि बैठीं मन बिसमय भयऊ॥ ४ ॥

śhravanāmṛita jehiṁ kathā suhāī kahī so pragaṭa hoti kina bhāī taba hanumaṁta nikaṭa chali gayaū phiri baiṭhīṁ mana bisamaya bhayaū

Translation

"You who have told this story that is nectar to the ears, why don't you show yourself, brother?" Then Hanuman went close to her; she turned and sat facing away, full of wonder.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

rāma dūta maiṁ mātu jānakī satya sapatha karunānidhāna kī yaha mudrikā mātu maiṁ ānī dīnhi rāma tumha kaham̐ sahidānī

Translation

"I am Rama's messenger, Mother Janaki; I swear it truly by the Treasury of Compassion. Mother, I have brought this ring, which Rama gave me as a token for you."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे माता जानकी! मैं राम का दूत हूँ, करुणानिधान की सच्ची शपथ करता हूँ। माता! यह अँगूठी मैं लाया हूँ, इसे राम ने आपके लिए पहचान के रूप में दिया था।"

Commentary

Sahidani means a token of identity. In the Kishkindha Kand Rama gave Hanuman this ring because he trusted that Hanuman, among all the searchers, would be the one to find her.

Verse 13.6

नर बानरहि संग कहु कैसें। कही कथा भइ संगति जैसें॥ ६ ॥

nara bānarahi saṁga kahu kaiseṁ kahī kathā bhai saṁgati jaiseṁ

Translation

"Tell me, how did men and monkeys come together?" Hanuman told her the story of how the alliance came about.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"बताओ, मनुष्यों और वानरों का साथ कैसे हुआ?" तब हनुमान जी ने वह कथा सुनाई कि यह मित्रता कैसे हुई।

Verse 13.7

कपि के बचन सप्रेम सुनि उपजा मन बिस्वास। जाना मन क्रम बचन यह कृपासिंधु कर दास॥ १३ ॥

kapi ke bachana saprema suni upajā mana bisvāsa jānā mana krama bachana yaha kṛipāsiṁdhu kara dāsa

Translation

Hearing the monkey's loving words, trust arose in her heart. She knew that in thought, deed and word he was a servant of the Ocean of Mercy.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

कपि के प्रेम भरे वचन सुनकर उनके मन में विश्वास उत्पन्न हुआ। उन्होंने जान लिया कि यह मन, कर्म और वचन से कृपासागर का दास है।

Commentary

Mana, krama, bachana (thought, deed and word) is a phrase Tulsidas uses for complete sincerity. Sita's trust rests not on the ring alone but on the love she hears in his voice.
