Sugriva's Suspicion

Doha 43: Sugriva's Suspicion

Sugriva suspects a spy; Rama answers with his vow to protect anyone who seeks refuge.

Verse 43.1

एहि बिधि करत सप्रेम बिचारा। आयउ सपदि सिंधु एहिं पारा॥ कपिन्ह बिभीषनु आवत देखा। जाना कोउ रिपु दूत बिसेषा॥ १ ॥

ehi bidhi karata saprema bichārā āyau sapadi siṁdhu ehiṁ pārā kapinha bibhīṣhanu āvata dekhā jānā kou ripu dūta biseṣhā

Translation

With such loving thoughts he quickly reached this side of the sea. The monkeys saw Vibhishana coming and took him for some important enemy envoy.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

इस प्रकार प्रेम सहित विचार करते हुए वे जल्दी ही समुद्र के इस पार आ गए। वानरों ने विभीषण को आते देखा, तो समझा कि शत्रु का कोई विशेष दूत है।

Verse 43.2

ताहि राखि कपीस पहिं आए। समाचार सब ताहि सुनाए॥ कह सुग्रीव सुनहु रघुराई। आवा मिलन दसानन भाई॥ २ ॥

tāhi rākhi kapīsa pahiṁ āe samāchāra saba tāhi sunāe kaha sugrīva sunahu raghurāī āvā milana dasānana bhāī

Translation

Keeping him there, they came to the king of the monkeys and told him all the news. Sugriva said, "Listen, Raghurai: Ravana's brother has come to meet you."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

उन्हें वहीं रोककर वे सुग्रीव के पास आए और सब समाचार सुनाया। सुग्रीव ने कहा, "हे रघुनाथ जी! सुनिए, रावण का भाई आपसे मिलने आया है।"

Verse 43.3

कह प्रभु सखा बूझिए काहा। कहइ कपीस सुनहु नरनाहा॥ जानि न जाइ निसाचर माया। कामरूप केहि कारन आया॥ ३ ॥

kaha prabhu sakhā būjhie kāhā kahai kapīsa sunahu naranāhā jāni na jāi nisāchara māyā kāmarūpa kehi kārana āyā

Translation

The Lord said, "Friend, what do you think?" The king of the monkeys said, "Listen, lord of men: demon trickery is hard to see through. He can take any form he likes; who knows why he has come?

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

प्रभु ने कहा, "हे मित्र! तुम क्या समझते हो?" वानरराज बोले, "हे महाराज! सुनिए, राक्षसों की माया समझ में नहीं आती। यह इच्छानुसार रूप बदलने वाला न जाने किस कारण आया है।

Verse 43.4

भेद हमार लेन सठ आवा। राखिअ बाँधि मोहि अस भावा॥ सखा नीति तुम्ह नीकि बिचारी। मम पन सरनागत भयहारी॥ ४ ॥

bheda hamāra lena saṭha āvā rākhia bām̐dhi mohi asa bhāvā sakhā nīti tumha nīki bichārī mama pana saranāgata bhayahārī

Translation

"The fool has come to spy on us. I think we should keep him bound." "Friend, you have thought through the policy well, but my vow is to take away the fear of anyone who seeks refuge."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"यह मूर्ख हमारा भेद लेने आया है, मुझे तो यही ठीक लगता है कि इसे बाँधकर रखा जाए।" (प्रभु बोले) "हे मित्र! तुमने नीति अच्छी तरह विचारी है, पर मेरा प्रण है कि शरणागत का भय दूर करूँ।"

Commentary

Sugriva gives the prudent, strategic answer; Rama answers with a vow. This is the heart of the "sharanagati" (refuge) section of the kand, which is often read on its own.

Verse 43.5

सुनि प्रभु बचन हरष हनुमाना। सरनागत बच्छल भगवाना॥ ५ ॥

suni prabhu bachana haraṣha hanumānā saranāgata bachchhala bhagavānā

Translation

Hearing the Lord's words, Hanuman rejoiced: "The Lord is loving to those who seek refuge."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

प्रभु के वचन सुनकर हनुमान जी प्रसन्न हुए कि भगवान शरणागत पर स्नेह करने वाले हैं।

Commentary

Hanuman is glad for two reasons: he had already met Vibhishana in Lanka and knows him to be a devotee, and he loves seeing Rama's nature revealed.

Verse 43.6

सरनागत कहुँ जे तजहिं निज अनहित अनुमानि। ते नर पावँर पापमय तिन्हहि बिलोकत हानि॥ ४३ ॥

saranāgata kahum̐ je tajahiṁ nija anahita anumāni te nara pāvam̐ra pāpamaya tinhahi bilokata hāni

Translation

"Those who abandon someone who has come for refuge, reckoning it might harm them, are base and sinful men; even to look at them does harm."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"जो लोग अपने अहित का अनुमान करके शरण में आए हुए को त्याग देते हैं, वे नीच और पापी हैं, उन्हें देखने से भी हानि होती है।"
