Vibhishana Crowned

Doha 49: Vibhishana Crowned

Rama crowns Vibhishana king of Lanka with seawater before any battle is fought.

Verse 49.1

सुनु लंकेस सकल गुन तोरें। तातें तुम्ह अतिसय प्रिय मोरें॥ राम बचन सुनि बानर जूथा। सकल कहहिं जय कृपा बरूथा॥ १ ॥

sunu laṁkesa sakala guna toreṁ tāteṁ tumha atisaya priya moreṁ rāma bachana suni bānara jūthā sakala kahahiṁ jaya kṛipā barūthā

Translation

"Listen, lord of Lanka: you have every virtue, and that is why you are so very dear to me." Hearing Rama's words, the troops of monkeys all cried, "Victory to the ocean of grace!"

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे लंकेश! सुनो, तुममें सब गुण हैं, इसी से तुम मुझे अत्यंत प्रिय हो।" राम के वचन सुनकर वानरों के सब झुंड कहने लगे, "कृपा के समूह की जय हो!"

Verse 49.2

सुनत बिभीषनु प्रभु कै बानी। नहिं अघात श्रवनामृत जानी॥ पद अंबुज गहि बारहिं बारा। हृदयँ समात न प्रेमु अपारा॥ २ ॥

sunata bibhīṣhanu prabhu kai bānī nahiṁ aghāta śhravanāmṛita jānī pada aṁbuja gahi bārahiṁ bārā hṛidayam̐ samāta na premu apārā

Translation

Hearing the Lord's words, Vibhishana could not have enough of that nectar for the ears. Again and again he clasped his lotus feet; his heart could not hold his boundless love.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

प्रभु की वाणी सुनते हुए विभीषण उसे कानों के लिए अमृत जानकर अघाते नहीं थे। वे बार-बार चरणकमल पकड़ते थे, हृदय में अपार प्रेम समाता नहीं था।

Verse 49.3

सुनहु देव सचराचर स्वामी। प्रनतपाल उर अंतरजामी॥ उर कछु प्रथम बासना रही। प्रभु पद प्रीति सरित सो बही॥ ३ ॥

sunahu deva sacharāchara svāmī pranatapāla ura aṁtarajāmī ura kachhu prathama bāsanā rahī prabhu pada prīti sarita so bahī

Translation

"Listen, my Lord, master of all that moves and is still, protector of those who bow to you, you who dwell within every heart: there was some desire in my heart before, but it has been swept away in the river of love for your feet.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे देव! हे चराचर जगत के स्वामी! हे शरणागत के रक्षक! हे सबके हृदय के भीतर की जानने वाले! सुनिए, मेरे मन में पहले कुछ वासना थी, पर वह प्रभु के चरणों की प्रीति रूपी नदी में बह गई।

Commentary

Vibhishana is honest: he admits he may have hoped for something, perhaps the throne. Meeting Rama washed that hope away.

Verse 49.4

अब कृपाल निज भगति पावनी। देहु सदा सिव मन भावनी॥ एवमस्तु कहि प्रभु रनधीरा। मागा तुरत सिंधु कर नीरा॥ ४ ॥

aba kṛipāla nija bhagati pāvanī dehu sadā siva mana bhāvanī evamastu kahi prabhu ranadhīrā māgā turata siṁdhu kara nīrā

Translation

"Now, compassionate one, give me your purifying devotion, which always delights Shiva's heart." Saying "So be it," the Lord, steady in battle, at once asked for water from the sea.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे कृपालु! अब मुझे अपनी पवित्र करने वाली भक्ति दीजिए, जो शिव जी के मन को सदा प्रिय है।" "एवमस्तु" कहकर रणधीर प्रभु ने तुरंत समुद्र का जल माँगा।

Verse 49.5

जदपि सखा तव इच्छा नाहीं। मोर दरसु अमोघ जग माहीं॥ अस कहि राम तिलक तेहि सारा। सुमन बृष्टि नभ भई अपारा॥ ५ ॥

jadapi sakhā tava ichchhā nāhīṁ mora darasu amogha jaga māhīṁ asa kahi rāma tilaka tehi sārā sumana bṛiṣhṭi nabha bhaī apārā

Translation

"Friend, though you have no such wish, my darshan never goes without fruit in this world." Saying this, Rama marked his forehead with the tilak of kingship, and a vast shower of flowers fell from the sky.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे मित्र! यद्यपि तुम्हारी इच्छा नहीं है, फिर भी जगत में मेरा दर्शन अमोघ है (कभी निष्फल नहीं जाता)।" यह कहकर राम ने उनका राजतिलक कर दिया, और आकाश से फूलों की अपार वर्षा हुई।

Commentary

Rama crowns Vibhishana king of Lanka with seawater, before a single battle has been fought. He treats the war's outcome as already settled.

Verse 49.6

रावन क्रोध अनल निज स्वास समीर प्रचंड। जरत बिभीषनु राखेउ दीन्हेउ राजु अखंड॥ ४९ (क) ॥

rāvana krodha anala nija svāsa samīra prachaṁḍa jarata bibhīṣhanu rākheu dīnheu rāju akhaṁḍa

Translation

Raghunath protected Vibhishana, who was being burned in the fire of Ravana's anger, fanned by the fierce wind of his own breath, and gave him an unbroken kingdom.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

रावण की क्रोध रूपी अग्नि में, जो उसकी अपनी साँस रूपी प्रचंड हवा से भड़क रही थी, जलते हुए विभीषण की उन्होंने रक्षा की और उन्हें अखंड राज्य दिया।

Verse 49.7

जो संपति सिव रावनहि दीन्हि दिएँ दस माथ। सोइ संपदा बिभीषनहि सकुचि दीन्हि रघुनाथ॥ ४९ (ख) ॥

jo saṁpati siva rāvanahi dīnhi diem̐ dasa mātha soi saṁpadā bibhīṣhanahi sakuchi dīnhi raghunātha

Translation

The wealth that Shiva gave Ravana when he offered his ten heads, that same wealth Raghunath gave to Vibhishana, and felt shy that it was so little.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

जो संपत्ति शिव जी ने रावण को उसके दसों सिर चढ़ाने पर दी थी, वही संपत्ति श्री रघुनाथ जी ने विभीषण को सकुचाते हुए दी।

Commentary

Ravana famously won his power by cutting off and offering his own heads to Shiva. What cost Ravana ten heads, Rama gives Vibhishana freely, and is even embarrassed (sakuchi) that the gift is so small.
