The Golden-Mountain Form

Doha 16: The Golden-Mountain Form

Asked whether the monkeys can defeat Ravana, Hanuman shows his giant form, and then gives the credit to Rama.

Verse 16.1

jauṁ raghubīra hoti sudhi pāī karate nahiṁ bilaṁbu raghurāī rāma bāna rabi uem̐ jānakī tama barūtha kaham̐ jātudhāna kī

Translation

"If Raghubir had had news of you, he would not have delayed. Janaki, when the sun of Rama's arrows rises, where will the darkness of the demon hosts be?

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

This answers Sita's reproach in 14.2 about Rama's apparent hardness: the delay came from not knowing where she was, not from a lack of love.

Verse 16.2

abahiṁ mātu maiṁ jāum̐ lavāī prabhu āyasu nahiṁ rāma dohāī kachhuka divasa jananī dharu dhīrā kapinha sahita aihahiṁ raghubīrā

Translation

"Mother, I would take you away with me right now, but I swear by Rama I have no command from the Lord to do so. Mother, bear it a few more days; Raghubir will come with the monkeys,

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Hanuman could carry Sita off, but he will not act beyond his orders. The rescue must be Rama's own, and the ideal servant does exactly what is asked, no less and no more.

Verse 16.3

nisichara māri tohi lai jaihahiṁ tihum̐ pura nāradādi jasu gaihahiṁ haiṁ suta kapi saba tumhahi samānā jātudhāna ati bhaṭa balavānā

Translation

"kill the demons and take you away, and Narada and the others will sing his praise in all three worlds." "Son, are all the monkeys like you? The demons are very mighty warriors.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Hanuman has taken a tiny form, and Sita reasonably doubts that an army of such small creatures could beat Ravana's warriors.

Verse 16.4

moreṁ hṛidaya parama saṁdehā suni kapi pragaṭa kīnhi nija dehā kanaka bhūdharākāra sarīrā samara bhayaṁkara atibala bīrā

Translation

"There is great doubt in my heart." Hearing this, the monkey revealed his true body: a form like a golden mountain, a hero terrifying in battle and immensely strong.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

This is the image of Hanuman in the third mangalacharan verse, hemashailabhadeham, "a body like a golden mountain," now seen in the story itself.

Verse 16.5

sītā mana bharosa taba bhayaū puni laghu rūpa pavanasuta layaū

Translation

Then Sita felt reassured, and the son of the wind took his small form again.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

sunu mātā sākhāmṛiga nahiṁ bala buddhi bisāla prabhu pratāpa teṁ garuṛahi khāi parama laghu byāla

Translation

"Listen, mother: monkeys have no great strength or intelligence. By the Lord's glory, the smallest snake can swallow Garuda."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

Commentary

Having just shown his giant form, Hanuman immediately gives the credit away. Garuda, the eagle who carries Vishnu, is the natural enemy of snakes, so a small snake swallowing him is the most unlikely thing imaginable, and even that becomes possible by Rama's grace.
