Without Fear There Is No Love

Doha 57: Without Fear There Is No Love

Shuka is kicked and joins Rama, freed from a curse. After three days the ocean still ignores Rama, and he grows angry.

Verse 57.1

सुनत सभय मन मुख मुसुकाई। कहत दसानन सबहि सुनाई॥ भूमि परा कर गहत अकासा। लघु तापस कर बाग बिलासा॥ १ ॥

sunata sabhaya mana mukha musukāī kahata dasānana sabahi sunāī bhūmi parā kara gahata akāsā laghu tāpasa kara bāga bilāsā

Translation

Hearing it, Ravana was afraid at heart but smiled with his face and said for all to hear: "Lying on the ground, he tries to grab the sky! That little ascetic's bluster!"

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

kaha suka nātha satya saba bānī samujhahu chhāṛi prakṛiti abhimānī sunahu bachana mama parihari krodhā nātha rāma sana tajahu birodhā

Translation

Shuka said, "Master, every word is true. Give up your proud nature and understand it. Hear my words, put aside your anger, and master, stop opposing Rama.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

शुक बोला, "हे नाथ! सब बातें सच हैं। अपना अभिमानी स्वभाव छोड़कर समझिए। क्रोध छोड़कर मेरी बात सुनिए, हे नाथ! राम से विरोध छोड़ दीजिए।

Verse 57.3

अति कोमल रघुबीर सुभाऊ। जद्यपि अखिल लोक कर राऊ॥ मिलत कृपा तुम्ह पर प्रभु करिही। उर अपराध न एकउ धरिही॥ ३ ॥

ati komala raghubīra subhāū jadyapi akhila loka kara rāū milata kṛipā tumha para prabhu karihī ura aparādha na ekau dharihī

Translation

"Raghubir's nature is extremely gentle, though he is king of all the worlds. When you meet him the Lord will be gracious to you and will not keep a single offence in his heart.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"रघुवीर का स्वभाव अत्यंत कोमल है, यद्यपि वे समस्त लोकों के राजा हैं। मिलते ही प्रभु आप पर कृपा करेंगे और आपका एक भी अपराध हृदय में नहीं रखेंगे।

Verse 57.4

जनकसुता रघुनाथहि दीजे। एतना कहा मोर प्रभु कीजे॥ जब तेहिं कहा देन बैदेही। चरन प्रहार कीन्ह सठ तेही॥ ४ ॥

janakasutā raghunāthahi dīje etanā kahā mora prabhu kīje jaba tehiṁ kahā dena baidehī charana prahāra kīnha saṭha tehī

Translation

"Give Janaka's daughter back to Raghunath. Master, do just this much of what I say." When he said to give back Vaidehi, the fool kicked him.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"जानकी जी श्री रघुनाथ जी को दे दीजिए। हे प्रभु! मेरा इतना कहना मान लीजिए।" जब उसने वैदेही को लौटाने की बात कही, तो उस मूर्ख ने उसे लात मारी।

Commentary

Ravana answers Shuka exactly as he answered Vibhishana (41.3), with a kick, and loses a second follower to Rama the same way.

Verse 57.5

नाइ चरन सिरु चला सो तहाँ। कृपासिंधु रघुनायक जहाँ॥ करि प्रनामु निज कथा सुनाई। राम कृपाँ आपनि गति पाई॥ ५ ॥

nāi charana siru chalā so tahām̐ kṛipāsiṁdhu raghunāyaka jahām̐ kari pranāmu nija kathā sunāī rāma kṛipām̐ āpani gati pāī

Translation

He bowed his head at his feet and went to where Raghunayak, the ocean of mercy, was. Bowing, he told his story, and by Rama's grace he regained his true state.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

वह चरणों में सिर नवाकर वहाँ चला जहाँ कृपासागर श्री रघुनाथ जी थे। प्रणाम करके उसने अपनी कथा सुनाई और राम की कृपा से अपनी गति (पहला स्वरूप) पा ली।

Verse 57.6

रिषि अगस्ति कीं साप भवानी। राछस भयउ रहा मुनि ग्यानी॥ बंदि राम पद बारहिं बारा। मुनि निज आश्रम कहुँ पगु धारा॥ ६ ॥

riṣhi agasti kīṁ sāpa bhavānī rāchhasa bhayau rahā muni gyānī baṁdi rāma pada bārahiṁ bārā muni nija āśhrama kahum̐ pagu dhārā

Translation

"Bhavani, he had been a wise sage, and had become a demon by the curse of the sage Agastya." Bowing again and again at Rama's feet, the sage went back to his own hermitage.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

(शिव जी कहते हैं) "हे भवानी! वह ज्ञानी मुनि था, जो अगस्त्य ऋषि के शाप से राक्षस हो गया था।" बार-बार राम के चरणों की वंदना करके वह मुनि अपने आश्रम को चला गया।

Verse 57.7

बिनय न मानत जलधि जड़ गए तीनि दिन बीति। बोले राम सकोप तब भय बिनु होइ न प्रीति॥ ५७ ॥

binaya na mānata jaladhi jaṛa gae tīni dina bīti bole rāma sakopa taba bhaya binu hoi na prīti

Translation

Three days had passed, and still the dull-witted ocean paid no heed to his plea. Then Rama said in anger, "Without fear there is no love."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

तीन दिन बीत गए, पर जड़ समुद्र विनती नहीं मानता। तब राम क्रोध सहित बोले, "बिना भय के प्रीति नहीं होती।"

Commentary

"Bhaya binu hoi na priti" is one of the most quoted lines of the kand: some will only respect what they fear. Rama has given courtesy three full days before turning to force.
