Doha 18: Wrecking the Grove

Hanuman uproots the garden, routs the guards and kills Ravana's son Akshayakumar.

Verse 18.1

चलेउ नाइ सिरु पैठेउ बागा। फल खाएसि तरु तोरैं लागा॥ रहे तहाँ बहु भट रखवारे। कछु मारेसि कछु जाइ पुकारे॥ १ ॥

chaleu nāi siru paiṭheu bāgā phala khāesi taru toraiṁ lāgā rahe tahām̐ bahu bhaṭa rakhavāre kachhu māresi kachhu jāi pukāre

Translation

He bowed his head and went into the garden. He ate the fruit and began breaking the trees. Many warriors were stationed there as guards; some he killed, and some ran to raise the alarm.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

सिर नवाकर वे चल पड़े और बाग में घुस गए। फल खाए और पेड़ तोड़ने लगे। वहाँ बहुत से योद्धा रखवाले थे, उनमें से कुछ को मार डाला, और कुछ ने जाकर पुकार मचाई।

Verse 18.2

नाथ एक आवा कपि भारी। तेहिं असोक बाटिका उजारी॥ खाएसि फल अरु बिटप उपारे। रच्छक मर्दि मर्दि महि डारे॥ २ ॥

nātha eka āvā kapi bhārī tehiṁ asoka bāṭikā ujārī khāesi phala aru biṭapa upāre rachchhaka mardi mardi mahi ḍāre

Translation

"Master, a huge monkey has come and wrecked the Ashoka grove. He ate the fruit, uprooted the trees, and crushed the guards and threw them on the ground."

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

"हे नाथ! एक बड़ा भारी बंदर आया है, जिसने अशोक वाटिका उजाड़ दी। उसने फल खाए, पेड़ उखाड़ दिए और रखवालों को मसल-मसलकर धरती पर पटक दिया।"

Verse 18.3

सुनि रावन पठए भट नाना। तिन्हहि देखि गर्जेउ हनुमाना॥ सब रजनीचर कपि संघारे। गए पुकारत कछु अधमारे॥ ३ ॥

suni rāvana paṭhae bhaṭa nānā tinhahi dekhi garjeu hanumānā saba rajanīchara kapi saṁghāre gae pukārata kachhu adhamāre

Translation

Hearing this, Ravana sent many warriors. Seeing them, Hanuman roared. The monkey killed all the demons; a few ran off crying out, half-dead.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

यह सुनकर रावण ने बहुत से योद्धा भेजे। उन्हें देखकर हनुमान जी ने गर्जना की। कपि ने सब राक्षसों को मार डाला, कुछ अधमरे चिल्लाते हुए भागे।

Verse 18.4

पुनि पठयउ तेहिं अच्छकुमारा। चला संग लै सुभट अपारा॥ आवत देखि बिटप गहि तर्जा। ताहि निपाति महाधुनि गर्जा॥ ४ ॥

puni paṭhayau tehiṁ achchhakumārā chalā saṁga lai subhaṭa apārā āvata dekhi biṭapa gahi tarjā tāhi nipāti mahādhuni garjā

Translation

Then he sent Prince Aksha, who came with countless fine warriors. Seeing him coming, Hanuman grabbed a tree and challenged him, struck him down, and let out a mighty roar.

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

फिर उसने अक्षयकुमार को भेजा। वह असंख्य श्रेष्ठ योद्धाओं को साथ लेकर चला। उसे आते देख हनुमान जी ने पेड़ हाथ में लेकर ललकारा, उसे मार गिराया और बड़े ज़ोर से गरजे।

Commentary

Akshayakumar was Ravana's youngest son. His death is the first blow to Ravana's own family.

Verse 18.5

कछु मारेसि कछु मर्देसि कछु मिलएसि धरि धूरि। कछु पुनि जाइ पुकारे प्रभु मर्कट बल भूरि॥ १८ ॥

kachhu māresi kachhu mardesi kachhu milaesi dhari dhūri kachhu puni jāi pukāre prabhu markaṭa bala bhūri

Translation

Some he killed, some he crushed, some he seized and ground into the dust. Some again ran to cry, "Lord, the monkey is immensely strong!"

Hindi Meaning (हिंदी अर्थ)

कुछ को मार डाला, कुछ को मसल दिया, कुछ को पकड़कर धूल में मिला दिया। कुछ फिर जाकर पुकारने लगे, "हे प्रभु! बंदर बहुत बलवान है।"
